Gregory Patterson’s Top Spring Hair Tips:

Trend: Warm Blond Highlights or Pastels

Product Recommendation: Ion Brights

To achieve this trend, one collection Patterson recommends is Ion Brights, an exclusive collection from Sally Beauty. He shares that it is “truly a DIY hair color artist’s dream palette to work from. Every single possible haircolor stem can come to life from the Ion Color Brilliance collection.”

Ion Brights Color Brilliance is made with powerful high-tech compounds to achieve exquisite, brilliant color with superior gray coverage. It’s available in Semi Permanent, Demi Permanent, and Permanent hair color in over 100 shades at Sally Beauty.

Trend: A Bright New Look with a Pop of Color

Product Recommendation: Good Dye Young Lightening Kit and a pop of color like Kowabunga

Patterson explains, “One of my favorite ways to try a trend without commitment that requires growing out is going for either the semi- or demi-permanent collections. Try a new hue and think of these two options as a sheer lip gloss over what you already have or layer them over your existing blonde for a new hue.”

To achieve this trend, Patterson recommends Good Dye Young, which he says is, “Literal perfection straight from the tube. The scent is heavenly and the product pigment is rich! Perfect for maintaining high-quality hair with mega-watt color impact.”

This subtle citrus-scented product is available in over 10 shades and features essential oil bergamot. The products are ammonia-free with a peroxide-free formulation, so they won't fry your hair.

Patterson adds, “If you’ve ever wanted to go bold and get away with it, now is the time. Select your hue—and if you don’t want to commit to the high-power color—dilute it down to soften or pastel the tone out. My favorite way to test the color before applying is on a white paper towel. Just swipe and mix until you get your exact shade!”

Trend: Multicolor Mix Colors like Fuchsia and Purple for a Classic Cranberry

Product Recommendation: Wella Color Charm Paints

For “insanely shiny gemstone-quality reflective tones,” Patterson recommends The Wella Color Charm Paints, sharing that they are extremely gentle and deposit mega color. “So hair fabric is in top quality and color fades tone on tone, which is dreamy,” he says.

Wella Color Charm Paints intermixable semi-permanent hair color with gentle acidic PH color lasts up to 20 washes depending on shade and initial color intensity. You can use multiple colors side by side without foils, mix shades together to design your own shade, and control shade intensity by adding PAINTS Clear pastelizer.

Patterson explains, “Color mixing is what really makes DIY color customizable—have fun with it. Always test color on a white paper towel until it’s just right. Also, you can take two shades like fuchsia and purple to create the “cranberry” effect by “color melting” directly on the section of hair. This is a fun way to create pro-like application results. You can’t mess it up!”

Trend: Bright Colors of the Summer

Product Recommendation: Arctic Fox

“Summer colors that will be hot this year range from lemon yellow to neon yellow anchored with cool smoky titanium and silver tones (hello, Pantone Colors of the year!) Another summer combo I’m loving is coral peach tones next to St. Tropez Water Blues mixed sitting under an umbrella of warm brown tones,” shares Patterson.

To achieve this look, he loves Arctic Fox’s long-lasting semi-permanent hair color that bleeds less than other semi-permanent brands and contains added conditioners. The dye is free from harsh chemicals often found in other dyes such as peroxide, ammonia, ethyl alcohol or PPD. All Arctic Fox colors are 100% vegan and 100% cruelty-free, and 15% of all profits are donated to animal-centered charities.

“Hair color that not only looks good but does good! I love a cruelty-free brand that gives back and also delivers incredible hair color. I love the amount of product you get in every bottle because once you start—you won’t be able to stop living in color,” raves Patterson.

Trend: A Color Upgrade to Your Natural Locks

Product Recommendation: One n’ Only

Patterson tells us that that One n’ Only is great for “rich, tried-and-true tones that deliver time and time again. I love the 10-minute grey coverage and their selection of rich blacks and bursting berry tones.”

One n’ Only is available in exclusive custom-blended shades crafted in Italy and provide superior gray coverage in 10 minutes. The collection is Infused with vegetable squalane oil and argan oil to help strengthen the cuticle and deliver intense smoothness and shine. It’s formulated for all hair types including multicultural and natural textures.
