Spa Profile: Uma Spa at Tierra Chiloé

Tierra Chiloé is a boutique spa Island hotel resort located on the island of Chiloé in Chile.

Tierra Chiloé is a boutique spa island hotel resort in a unique geographical setting, perched in a prime position on Chile’s island of Chiloé. Guests enjoy stunning views of pastures, clifftops, and dramatic coastline, and can choose from a wide selection of outdoor land and sea excursions. The local culture is also woven into each and every space throughout the hotel, which celebrates the epicurean customs and product of the island.

The hotel’s eco-friendly architecture makes the most of the island’s changeable climate for heating and ventilation, and is made of locally-sourced wood and clad in shingles. The exteriors mimic the traditional homes of local fishing communities, while the interior features panoramic windows that provide uninterrupted views of the Pacific Ocean, along with furniture and decor made by local craftspeople.

After a day spent exploring, many guests enjoy unwinding at Uma Spa, the hotel’s sanctuary for relaxation. The spa features a warm and inviting atmosphere with local wood and heated stone floors, which makes for an especially cozy experience when it rains. Amenities include two heated pools (one indoor and one outdoor), including an infinity pool that overlooks the wildlife-rich Pullao wetland. There is also a seashell-like sauna and steam room, while the treatment menu includes a variety of specialty massages and body treatments that incorporate local ingredients.

We interviewed Katherine Zenteno, Spa Manager at Uma Spa at Tierra Chiloé, who shared insider tips, recommended treatments to try, and more.

Why You’ll Love It: I think everyone loves how secluded and calm Uma Spa is. Once you enter the spa, your mood changes immediately—you feel welcomed. The warmth, the aroma, and the smooth lighting of the spa allows for guests to instantly relax, embracing the experiences they are about to have and an attitude of full enjoyment.

Key Features: Uma Spa at Tierra Chiloé features two intimate treatment rooms, a dry sauna, and a steam room. You will also find an indoor pool with hydro-massage jets, and an infinite outside pool, which overlooks the Pullao wetlands and the island´s beautiful landscape.

The hotel’s interior features panoramic windows that offer expansive views of the Pacific Ocean.

Snacks Served: We have a variety of teas, juices, and infusions, as well as daily flavors of detox water, which perfectly complements any spa treatment. The detox waters are also an integral part of our hydrotherapy circuits, which all guests can experience at our spa's facilities. The spa also offers snacks, such as fruit, nuts, and healthy preparations made in the hotel restaurant.

Insider’s Tip: I always say to our visitors that relaxation goes beyond the spa, and that having your own space for reconnection and quiet is very important. Every person should practice habits such as having moments of silence during the day, doing breathing exercises, and connecting with your emotions. Staying hydrated, sunbathing in the mornings, and physical activity are things you can also integrate into your daily routine that support self-care and wellness rituals.

Bonus: I would say one of the services that guests may not be aware of is the possibility to have a luxe spa bath without leaving your room. We offer soothing baths in-room, utilizing the spa´s best products. This is a great option for a more private relaxation experience. The in-room baths include juices, teas, herbal infusions, and snacks—in addition to bouquets or organza pouches filled with your personal selection from the menu of flowers and herbs.

The outdoor heated infinity pool also offers views of the wildlife-rich Pullao wetland.

Unique Treatment: The Tierra Chiloé Ritual, as it’s a very complete and holistic treatment featuring the best products and techniques of the island. It consists of a full-body exfoliation with maqui exfoliant, a body wrap with thermal mud and maqui, a relaxation massage with Chilean hazelnut and almond or coconut oil, cold stones, and aromatic mist.

Maqui is one of the most important products that grows in the south of Chile. It’s considered a super food and has loads of antioxidants. The Chilean hazelnut, on the other hand, has been recognized as a great cosmetic product by the Mapuche, the native people of the south of Chile. It has powerful oils that promote cellular development, so it’s used for anti-aging treatments and it can act as a natural UV filter.

Insider’s Favorite: I love all of our treatments because I enjoy seeing that everything we have created undoubtedly generates well-being for each guest who visits us. It’s such an honor to see our guests feeling happy and relieved, reconnecting with their relaxed bodies.

Uma Spa has an indoor heated pool, along with a seashell-like sauna and steam room.

Splurge Treatment: One of the most luxurious treatments we have is the Kurantu Massage. During the 80-minute treatment, guests are able to feel a deep connection to Chiloé´s cultural tradition, as it rescues the ancient hot-stone cooking technique into a relaxing massage using local stones and a variety of temperatures. The contrast between hot and cold invigorates the body, and makes you feel recovered and relaxed. Hot stone therapy is very beneficial, as it reduces stress and anxiety, relaxes tense muscles, and promotes good sleep—making this treatment the perfect choice for vacation spa time.

The spa’s relaxing ambience includes local wood and heated stone floors that create a cozy refuge.

Featured Products: At Uma Spa we work with local products made by small companies that are recovering ancestral native products and techniques. We choose to work with small entrepreneurs and to support local communities by purchasing their organic products. For all of our other products that are not locally sourced, we feature Austral Organics, a Chilean brand that has a variety of certified organic, cruelty-free cosmetic products.
