Tastemakers and Trendsetters: Jon Carlos de la Cruz, Bi-Coastal Stylist and CosmoProf Artistic Team Member
In Tastemakers and Trendsetters, we talk to inspirational leaders in the world of spa, beauty, and wellness. This week we chatted with Jon Carlos de la Cruz, stylist and CosmoProf artistic team member. De la Cruz, who takes clients in both Beverly Hills and Rhode Island, is known for his signature blowouts and specializes in working with textured hair. From the latest trends to beauty advice, check out all of his amazing tips in our interview.
How long have you been working as a stylist and what inspired you to get into the industry?
I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist for about 10 years. I grew up in the industry so hair was second nature. I’m not going to lie, I've always said I would never professionally do hair. I mean, I’ve been doing it all my life. I always dreamed of being in entertainment. I love making people laugh, making people happy, helping people see their importance and potential. At one point I had to accept that I really enjoyed doing hair and I was really good at it. I learned hair isn’t limited to just behind the chair. Hair is a whole superstar status.
Tell us more about your work. Is there a signature technique you are known for? Are there any projects you are most proud of?
I’ve mastered all hair types, however, I specialize in textured hair. I have an ethnic-based clientele that requires a specific approach. I would say my signature is successfully coloring textured hair, maintaining its health and shine. Also my signature blowouts make the crowd go wild. My most proud project so far I would say is joining the CosmoProf Artistic Team. Giving myself the opportunity to grow, be heard, give back, and inspire.
What are some of your favorite products?
My favorites include Moroccanoil, It’s a 10, Sebastian, BioSilk, Aquage, Pravana, Schwarzkopf, Matrix, Joico, and Sexy Hair.
Any trends you are noticing for summer? What are your most requested styles lately?
The chunky money pieces have definitely made a comeback, but with all honesty, I feel the balayage effect is always going to remain classic and most requested. One movement that became trending on Tik Tok during the pandemic was cutting your own bangs at home. Now that’s been entertaining to fix!
Who inspires you?
My mom always inspired me. I’m third-generation in the industry following my grandmother and mom. She is a color specialist. What I saw in my mom wasn’t just her talent, it was her selflessness, determination, charisma, and charm. She taught me that anything less than my best is unacceptable.
Secret to success?
Don’t ever be afraid to ask for help. Sometimes our egos won’t allow us to work smarter, so always remember that even the most successful person couldn’t do it alone. Just always be a good person and never forget the hands that fed you.
Beauty Secrets?
As shallow as this may sound, it’s truly not: Always look your best. When you look good, you feel good, you do good. Oh, and never walk out of your home in a wrinkled shirt...ever! That ain’t cute.
Wellness tip?
Your mental and overall health should always come first. Take care of you before you take care of others.
Best advice?
Don’t take anything personally!
