Times are stressful and tensions are high as we practice social distancing to keep ourselves healthy. Many of us are in self-quarantine and are practicing social distancing, so it’s important to keep your mind stimulated and your spirits high.
Music is not only my passion, it brings me comfort. Writing my feelings, putting my emotions to a melody and singing my experiences is therapeutic for me. But you don’t have to be a songwriter or Billboard-charting artist to appreciate music a little more too.
In fact, several studies find that music truly is medicine. From operating rooms to benefiting children with autism spectrum disorder, there are several tangible benefits to listening to music right now. Music can positively impact your mood, help you to relax, stimulate your own creativity and help you to heal. Here are three ways music has the power to soothe:
1. It offers the healing power of vibration.
Over the weekend, Grammy-Award winning artist Lizzo took to Instagram to share the power of healing through music. She led a 30-minute guided meditation playing her flute “to promote healing” as she captioned the post.
Listening to other ‘relaxing’ music with a slow tempo, low pitch and no lyrics can reduce stress and anxiety in healthy people, as well as in people undergoing medical procedures like surgery, dental work or a colonoscopy.
2. It boosts creativity.
Most of us know music rouses the senses. After all, music is part of many daily routines. We listen to music to get pumped up for a workout, to feel more relaxed, and to stay focused and entertained while driving. Did you know it can also inspire creativity? A study found that positive-sounding music can also give a measurable boost in creativity. In today’s routine of social distancing, try listening to music when you’re feeling blocked or in a creative cul-de-sac.
3. It provides comfort.
Music therapy has been proven to enhance communication, coping, and expression of feelings of fear, loneliness and anger. Patients with varying ailments such as Alzheimer’s or those that have suffered strokes tend to experience better cognizance after listening to music.
