How to Get Your Skin Back On Track After A Long Day in the Sun

Hot days spent with your face out in the sun means your skin is sure to pay the price! Have no fear—there are three things that will quickly get your skin back on a healthy track. Lora Condon, NYT bestselling author, celebrity aesthetician and the owner of Jersey Boutique Spa, shares her skincare tips. 

For Sunburns: Feeling burned or inflamed after an outdoor concert? Take a colloidal finely milled oatmeal bath! (It’s proven to sooth dry, itchy, irritated skin). Next, hydrate. Burns remove water from your body, so be sure to replace your fluids with water. If you’re not a water drinker, add fresh lemon juice to make it taste better. If the sunburn is causing a fever or blister, go to the doctor. It could be sun poisoning, which needs to be treated immediately.

For Bumps/Acne: Spending the day outside enjoying the beach or an outdoor concert may be fun, but chances are you might find small bumps or even acne pop up on your skin. Most foundations increase oil production—mix that with sun and sweat, and your face becomes a breathing ground for bacteria. 

NEVER use alcohol or benzoyl peroxide-based products on breakouts. These ingredients irritate the skin, causing it to be crusty. Benzoyl especially damages and kills the surrounding new skin cells, which inhibits regeneration of the tissue and no one wants uneven texture or damaged skin all over their body. Instead, use an aloe or tea tree oil-based product like Bump Blaster from Beauty Buster Skin Care (which has pine, tea tree, rosewater, aloe and meadowfoam). It will kill the bacteria and restore the skin at the same time.

For Dry Skin Patches: The sun is a beast and can cause the skin to become extremely dry, flaky, or even develop bleeding cracks. Opt for a balm moisturizer that is oil or cream-based (not water) to lock in moisture.
