Thinking of getting a laser treatment this summer? We chatted with Dr. Robert Anolik, a board-certified dermatologist specializing in cosmetic dermatology and laser skin surgery, to find out what the most popular laser treatments are and get the scoop on Thermage—a non-invasive radiofrequency therapy that is used to smooth, tighten, and contour all skin types on the face and body.

What are the top 3 most popular laser treatments that clients seek in the summer?

Fraxel Dual, Clear & Brilliant, and Thermage.

Why do patients get Thermage and what results can they expect?

Patients undergo Thermage treatment because they are targeting unwanted fine lines and wrinkles. It goes deeper than many of the other popular dermatology treatments available, so many patients will describe a positive firming or tightening effect on the skin.

What parts of the body can people get this treatment on?

Frankly, I've used this on most body parts. Popular areas are the face, neck, décolletage, upper arms and elbow crepiness, buttocks, thighs, and knee crepiness.

Is there anything the client should do to prepare for their treatment?

No preparation is needed.

Is there anyone who would not be a candidate for this treatment?

Rarely, but yes. I wouldn't recommend treating over any implanted metal other than dental work. I also wouldn't recommend treating someone with anything electronic in the body such as a defibrillator or pacemaker.

What should the patient expect during the treatment?

The technology has become remarkably more comfortable over the years. Now people find the sensation should be one of easily tolerated heat. If it's painful, too much energy is being used and the dermatologist can lower the power.

Is there anything the client should do or avoid after for post-treatment care?

Just be gentle with the skin in the hours that follow. And I wouldn't recommend substantial sun exposure in the days that follow. Normal sun exposure with sunscreen is fine.
