As anyone who’s visited Tulum can tell you, the destination is magical. When you’re immersed in this Mexican oasis, you’re not just getting a tropical vacation; you’re also opening yourself up to a transformational experience. From the crystal-clear waters of cenotes (Spanish for “sinkholes”) to the lush green landscapes of the Mayan jungle, there’s no shortage of life-changing adventures in Tulum.

Mexico Spa Guide: The Best Spas in Mexico City

That said, adventure isn’t for everyone. Sometimes, travelers desire the quiet of their air-conditioned hotel room or the luxurious comfort of a world-class spa. Luckily for them, Tulum also offers that. Moreover, the spas in Tulum are unique because a lot of them are inspired by the Mayan roots of the region. As you would in other spas around the world, you can find manicures, pedicures, hot tubs, cold plunges, and face and body treatments in the Mexican escape.

What you can only find in Tulum spas, however, are the rituals particular to this coastal region. The treatments and rites of this area are unique in that they help you achieve relaxation on a physical, emotional, and spiritual level. Cacao Spa Tulum

Av. Tulum 32, Tulum Centro, 77760 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico; (+52) 998-241-8650

The benefits of cacao abound—both for the physical ingredient and this Tulum spa of the same name. Considering that you can get massages as well as organic and clinical facials, you can leave Cacao Spa Tulum feeling like the absolute best version of yourself.

In terms of massages, you can pick from an astonishing 11 options. These include Swedish, holistic, reflexology, lymphatic drainage, and prenatal massages. Cacao Spa even has something called a “4 Hands in Synergy” massage, which involves two therapists moving in sync all over your body.

Another neat feature about this spa is that Cacao’s massage page tells you exactly what to expect from each treatment. Of course, it outlines the price points for 60- and 90-minute massages. It also tells you the pressure that’s applied for each of the 11 options and allows you to choose extras. These add-ons include a self-warming eye mask, which can help reduce headaches and nasal congestion. You might also opt for a berry-scented butter to moisturize the skin.

As far as their facials, you also have myriad from which to choose. There are five options for organic facials and three choices for clinical facials. Each facial comes with cleansing, exfoliation, a facial mask, a hydration phase, facial massage, and an express relaxing massage. In case you're wondering, that last part involves a quick massage of your hands, arms, neck, shoulders, and head.

What’s more is that you can get a package in which you get a massage and an organic facial. Talk about utter relaxation! Cacao Spa Tulum is open every day from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. To make an appointment, visit the spa’s website and select book now.

Kumaru Spa at Kanan Tulum

Carretera Tulum Boca Paila Km 7.5 Mza 20 Reg 9, Tulum, Q.R. Mexico; (+52) 998-830-1512

If you’re looking for a Tulum hotel and spa that’s kid-free, Kanan Tulum is the best choice. What’s also cool about Kumaru Spa is that you can pick one of four locations to enjoy your selected service. Those places include: the jungle jacuzzi spa cabin; the Itxchel sanctuary, which overlooks the sea; the rooftop, which also has an ocean view; or in your hotel room for extra privacy. A popular option at Kumaru seems to be the deluxe honeymoon massage, which takes place in your room.

That’s far from the only service you can get at Kumaru, though. The Tulum spa also offers facials focused on brightening the skin, promoting hydration and firmness, and even a facial that’s designed for sunburned skin. There are also a number of body treatments, including an ancestral cacao wrap, as well as red clay and Mayan clay treatments. Of course, you can also get a manicure (gel or regular polish) as well as a pedicure.

Whether you want to get a relaxing massage, a hot stones massage, or a simple 25-minute neck, shoulder, and back massage, keep in mind that the spa is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. To book your treatment, email reservations@kanantulum.com.

Naj Naáy Spa at The Beach Tulum

KM 7.2, Carr. Tulum-Boca Paila, Tulum Beach, Zona Hotelera, 77780 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico; +1 (855) 246-5575

Because Naj Naáy Spa is inside The Beach Tulum, it’s only available to hotel guests. That said, a stay at The Beach Tulum is definitely worth it. The rooms are absolutely gorgeous and, even if they weren’t, it’d be great to stay here just for access to the five-star spa. Speaking of the spa, you can get classical massages there including Swedish, Thai, and sports massages.

Naj Naáy also includes healing modalities like Mayan and Ayurvedic therapies. The Mayan therapies include a sobada Maya (aka an abdominal massage), and a limpia, which is an ancient Mayan ritual that cleanses your auric field. Additionally, Ayurvedic therapies—which are considered the oldest healing sciences—available include Abhyanga, during which your therapist will anoint warm oil on all your joints.

Other treatments include a 60-minute healing circuit, which starts in a humid area and then has guests rotate through a sauna, Turkish bath, Scottish shower, hot pool, and cold pool. Botanic facials, like the Sun-Kissed Facial that’s designed to treat a sun-exposed or dehydrated dermis, are also on the menu. You can also take your pick of body treatments like a Kaape—which is an antioxidant and detoxifying coffee treatment.

Hotel guests can visit the spa from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Make your appointment by calling 1-855-246-5575.

Quinto Elemento Spa Tulum

Avenida Coba, esquina entrada Aldea Zama Hunab, Planta Alta, 77760 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico; (+52) 984-370-0173

In Spanish, quinto elemento means “fifth element”—which is a nod to an otherworldly substance. Staying true to its essence, Quinto Elemento Spa Tulum offers services based on the four elements: earth, air, fire, and water. (Read: The spa itself is the fifth element.)

In its earth element, you’ll see facial treatments including a deep cleansing facial, microdermabrasion, and eyebrow tinting. The air element features healing sessions like sound healing and a steam bath in a sacred temple. Massages and spa rituals comprise the fire element. And last but not least, in its water element you’ll find manicures and pedicures.

Quinto Elemento also offers healing rituals, which deserve a spotlight of their own and each last 2.5 hours. Keeping with the theme, these experiences are divided into four elements. The air ritual is a journey of unconditional love. The fire ritual looks to help you harmonize your being. The water ritual encourages you to let your emotions flow freely. And the earth ritual hopes to connect you to your roots.

If you want to drop in for these show-stopping services, know that the spa is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 9 p.m. You can book an appointment online or call (+52) 984-370-0173.

Yäan Healing Sanctuary

Carretera Boca Paila KM 10, Quintana Roo 15, 77760 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico; (+52) 984-980-0676

According to the spa’s website, Yäan Healing Sanctuary is a place “where you will find your inner and outer beauty in the integration of mind, body, and soul.” This tracks, considering that upon entrance, you’re immediately greeted by a lively burning flame. Yäan also incorporates all four elements into its landscape.

The spa itself is a gorgeous space that’s been featured in publications like goop, National Geographic Traveler, Condé Nast Traveler, and Forbes. It’s honestly not hard to see why. Yäan’s facilities include hot and cold massage pools, a rooftop garden, a temazcal (or a Mexican sweat lodge), and a yoga area with a gorgeous view.

Its treatments are equally impressive, with a menu that features seven different massages and the same amount of Mexican therapies. What caught our eye, in particular, was the 90-minute Aztec Chakra Balancing Massage. This treatment is a blend of physical and spiritual healing, as it uses floral oils to encourage internal healing and includes massage as well as visualization.

In line with its mission of supporting energetic and vibrational healing, the spa also offers biomagentic healing, soaking baths, and Reiki. But don’t take that to mean that its beauty offerings fall to the wayside. In fact, they have a whole section devoted to beauty healing.

For example, you can choose between the Yäan Lifting Renewal facial and the Luminous facial. The former is designed to “purify, balance, and moisturize the skin.” The latter is meant to “remove all impurities and fade away the damages caused by pollution.”

Pay the spa a visit any day from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. To book your appointment or get more info on the spa, email info@yaanhealingsanctuary.com.
