Spa Profile: Aurora, The Spa at Las Alcobas
Located in the heart of Masaryk, a renowned shopping, fashion, arts and entertainment district in the upscale Polanco neighborhood in Mexico City, Las Alcobas is a luxury five-star boutique hotel that was previously a palatial private residence. The refined property has been converted into a collection of intimate alcoves and features stunning interior design, beautiful guest rooms and lavish suites, and two gourmet restaurants led by award-winning chefs that highlight local flavors.
Aurora, The Spa at Las Alcobas is the hotel’s tranquil spa that showcases ancient techniques with traditional ingredients in its treatments. It combines the vibrant energy of Mexico City with regional ingredients and age-old healing techniques to offer guests a selection of healing experiences. The spa’s team of expert therapists have been trained to intuitively tailor each treatment according to guests’ needs so they can enjoy a personalized journey toward well-being.
We interviewed Marjorie Charlton, General Manager of Las Alcobas, to learn more about treatments to try, insider tips, and more.
Why You’ll Love It: When our guests enter the spa, they feel they have just discovered a hidden alcove of the hotel where they are immediately enveloped by aromas and soothing sounds. Their sense of discovery is heightened as their eyes scan the cozy space with indigenous herbs on display or we find their curious gaze on the tempting scrub bar. Our guests treasure the intimate nature of our sacred space and it naturally allows them to relax in the arms of our qualified team.
Key Features: Our guests love our personalized scrub bar. Large glass containers hold a range of natural ingredients which are mixed after a quick consultation with our guest to ensure that the mix is exactly what they need for that visit.
Snacks Served: Our guests are pampered with freshly prepared Rooibos tea alongside our freshly prepared trail mix from our Anatol kitchen.
Insider’s Tip: One of our insider tips is after our guests watch the Scrub Bar Ritual, they will be able to do it at home, easily and inexpensively. As we are in Mexico City, this is a real tip to keep skin clean, buffed, and free from the congestion that happens due to pollution.
Bonus: The spa team leaves a spa tray in the guests room the day of their treatment to give our guests a sense of expectation for their treatments. It includes a plush robe with slippers, plus a bath and body gel that complements their specific treatment.
Splurge Treatment: The Herbolario Mexican treatment at Aurora is a must-try. It combines herbs with a specialized massage to target your nervous system. Heated herbal bags with treasured regionally-inspired ingredients—bougainvillea, eucalyptus, camphor, cinnamon, and guava–are placed on your body to provide warmth and relaxation. The treatment’s carefully curated ingredients help with fatigue, trouble sleeping, body aches, a compromised immune system, and muscle pain. To level it up even further, guests can add our house-made scrubs to the treatment.
Unique Treatment: Our Mayan Healing Ritual is considered our most unique. The treatment is inspired by one of Mexico’s most stunning moments in astral history. The storied Chicxulub crater impacted the Yucatan Peninsula centuries ago, leaving behind stray particles of the meteor. The minerals used in the Mayan Healing Ritual—the Chicxulub mud—is inspired by this historic “space dust.”
This Chicxulub mud is applied as a scrub on the body, and then the body is wrapped to activate the minerals and enhance penetration into the skin. The combination of heat and the mineral-rich mud contributes to the rejuvenation and repair of the body. Ultimately, this connection to outer space adds a captivating and distinctive element to the treatment.
Insider’s Favorite: After major holidays and celebrations in Mexico, I enjoy the Detox Massage. Its vigorous, short strokes increase circulation and remove toxins. It also flushes the lymph system and promotes draining of the body’s excess fluids. The treatment incorporates a rosemary inhalation moment along with a ginger and juniper oil, which I swear by.
Featured Products: Currently, we are only using fresh ingredients alongside Neal’s Yard essential oils blended into massage oils, as well as for inhalations.
