In Tastemakers and Trendsetters, we talk to inspirational leaders in the world of spa, beauty, and wellness. This week we chatted with Keon Washington, Master Barber, owner of Wavelengths Barbershop in Greenville, SC, and Cosmo Prof Artistic Team Member. Keep reading for Washington’s insightful beauty and wellness tips, trends, and more!

How long have you been working as a barber and what inspired you to get into the industry?

I have been cutting hair for 18 years now, almost 7 of them professionally. Honestly, what got me into the industry was never anything intentional. Growing up as a teenager I wasn’t fortunate enough to have the money to go and get haircuts professionally, so I just picked up clippers to help a friend and the rest is history.

Tell us more about your work. Is there a signature technique you are known for?

While I specialize in realistic and abstract designs, I am actually most known for my “123” fading technique that takes the traditional method of fading and flips the approach. It is without question what I am most proud of and how far it has taken me.

What are some of your favorite products?

Olaplex is my number one, Wahl Clipper company, followed by Reuzel. Without a doubt, these are some of my top favorites. Slick Gorilla powder, American Crew fiber, Mydentity 6MR color, DevaCurl, and Pravana are some more favorites.

Are there any trends you are noticing for summer? What are your most requested styles lately?

There has been a resurgence of longer length fun styles: mullets being one of the biggest, along with shags and pixie style multi-faceted cuts. Vanguards and pompadours are also really popular classic styles. We’re also seeing a lot of afros and kinky, coarse, longer length natural styles.

Who inspires you?

My Cosmo Prof team, of course. They are amazing. The Scumbags Barbers are two of my favorite barbers in the world—pure skill and character unmatched. Jacob Kahn and Ben White are both really great educators and friends —super talented and multi-faceted. Guy Tang, of course, who is one of my greatest friends and co-collaborators in and outside the industry. Music and hair being two of our mutual loves, we have made songs together. Philip Ring, Ruby Devine, all of my Goonies hair group. Matt Beck, Jcash the Hair Tech, and honestly too many to name.

Beauty secrets?

Wellness next to our physical maintenance. Drink a lot of water, pay attention to what you eat, but also eat what you want. Find time for you—mental stresses and woes are even worse than others and can and will take a toll on you physically. Develop some key skincare regimens: Murad and Reuzel have some great skincare products, including daily facial cleansers and masks.

Wellness tip?

Work out in whatever way is best for you, even if that solely means just being more active and mobile—get out of the house and off the phone. Immerse yourself in the real world and just enjoy that. Love yourself and prioritize you as much as you do anyone else. And continue to take proper safety measures in today’s climate and time.

Best advice?

The single best piece of advice I can give to anyone: Be willing to outwork everyone without competing with anyone but yourself!
