In the last two years, the professional beauty and wellness industry has experienced a whirlwind of changes. The pandemic led to shutdowns, reopenings, and reimaginings of the way people approach their self-care rituals. So, what does wellness and beauty look like in 2022? 

Mindbody recently conducted a study of more than 16,000 Americans to learn about their current wellness and beauty practices. “A clear majority now see wellness as worth prioritizing in life, and they’re willing to put in the time to do it,” shares Mindbody. We take a look at the results of the study for a peek at the top beauty and wellness services in 2022. 

Top Beauty Trends for 2022 

The Mindbody study took a look at the fastest rebounding services (compared to last year) in the beauty industry.

The Top Three Beauty Service Trends for 2022:

These beauty services are on the rise since last year:

  • Manicure/Pedicures (Up 50%)

  • Eyebrow Waxing/Threading (Up 50%)

  • Botox/fillers (Up 37%)

The Top Hair Services Trends for 2022

These are the top hair salon services on the rise since last year:

  • Haircutting (Up 23%)

  • Hair styling/ Blow drying (Up 100%)

  • Hair Color (Up 24%)

Top Body Services for 2022:

Gen Z women and millennials (men and women) are seeking out these body services the most:

  • Manicure/Pedicure

  • Eyebrow Services

  • Body Hair Removal

  • Facials

  • Full Body Skin Treatments (detox body wrap, mud, etc)

Top Men’s Beauty Services for 2022

Men’s beauty and grooming is more popular than ever and millennial men are the leading group when it comes to participating in wellness services. 

  • Barber Services (e.g. beard trimming/styling, custom shave, facial hair maintenance, etc.)

  • Advanced skin care (e.g., laser treatments, microneedling, HydraFacial®, etc.)

  • Full body skin treatments (e.g., mud/detox body wrap, etc.) Non-surgical body sculpting treatments (e.g., CoolSculpting®, laser, radiofrequency body treatments, etc.)

Does vaccination status matter when it comes to visitors? According to Mindbody, “A majority of people of all ages are more comfortable interacting with fully vaccinated staff, with increased impact on younger generations. If your staff is fully vaccinated, make that clear to your customers. Continue to highlight all safety and sanitization protocols with your clients, too,” shares Mindbody.

Skincare Trends to Watch Out for in 2022:

Facial Exercise: “Nearly three in ten respondents already do or are interested in toning their face muscles with facial exercises, like face yoga—with almost equal interest from men and women (28% and 29%, respectively).”

Men’s Skincare: Millennial men are seeking out skin services like laser treatments, microneedling, HydraFacial.

Red Light Therapy: Red Light Therapy is up 50%. Red Light therapy is used to stimulate collagen production and for other skin and wellness treatments. 

Top Wellness Trends for 2022

Millennials (Ages 25-40) are the group seeking the most wellness services. “Cleanliness remains a top factor when consumers are considering a salon, spa, or wellness business,” says Mindbody.
