4 DIY Summer Skin Care Tips

As you prepare to show more skin and spend extra time under the sun during the coming weeks, you’ll want to keep your skin healthy while indulging in summertime fun. While we love lounging on the beach and in the ocean or pool, we’re not big fans of the negative side effects that occur as a result, which range from dry skin to chapped lips and more. We chatted with spa managers from Playa Hotels & Resorts, which has prime beachfront locations throughout Mexico and the Caribbean, who shared top skin care tips and secrets to keep skin glowing throughout the hottest months of the year.

1. Prevent an Itchy Scalp

“Sun care begins with exfoliation, as the sun is attracted to dry, dead skin and will quickly burn areas of the body that need to be refreshed. To prevent a dry or itchy scalp, exfoliate the scalp with Himalayan Sea Salt in the shower—rubbing in gentle circles—to remove dead skin and nourish the scalp, so that the sun will not burn and create dry skin and dandruff.” – Alejandra Sotomayor, Spa Manager at Panama Jack Resorts Cancun

2. Combat a Dry/Dull Complexion

“To keep skin moisturized and glistening in the summer, mix two tablespoons of cooked natural oats, one tablespoon of plain yogurt, and half a tablespoon of honey to create a natural mask. Apply a thin layer to your face and neck, making little circles, and let sit for 10-15 minutes. Rinse with cold water and your skin is set!” – Guadalupe Cueva, Spa Manager at Panama Jack Playa del Carmen

3. Hydrate Chapped Lips

“Fresh cucumber is an excellent hydrating agent for the skin, so utilize it to treat dry and chapped lips. Rub a cucumber slice gently on your lips for 1-2 minutes, leaving the juice on your lips for 10 minutes before washing it off. You can also mash 1-2 cucumber slices and apply this as a hydrating mask on your lips. Do this 1-2 times a day, and all the flakiness and dryness will be gone in a few days.” – Laura Cruz, Spa Manager at Hilton Playa del Carmen

4. Care for Post-Swim Skin

Counter the effects of chlorine and ocean pollution to reveal dewy, soft skin with a refreshing citrus avocado mask that will leave your face feeling as smooth as a baby’s bottom. Combine half an avocado (mashed), half a lemon (juiced), and one tablespoon of coconut oil, and apply a thin layer on your face. Leave on for 15-20 minutes and wash off with warm water.” – Laura Cruz, Spa Manager at Hilton Playa del Carmen
