When it comes to practicing proper sun protection, most of the focus tends to be on our skin—not the hair and scalp. But as it turns out, your hair and scalp are equally affected by the sun’s UV rays, which can lead to brittle hair and even sunburn.

Other effects of UV exposure on the scalp and hair include color fade and discoloration. A hat or scarf are always good options for protection, but if you don’t want to spend your entire summer covered up (especially when you’re at the beach or pool), there are some other alternatives.

4 Easy Ways to Air-Dry Hair to Perfection

“First, it’s good to know that there are hair products with natural ingredients that offer UV protection,” says Fabian Lliguin, cofounder and president of Rahua. “Look for ingredients like Morete oil (also known as buriti) derived from an Amazonian fruit rich in vitamins A, C, and E, essential fatty acids, tocopherols, and beta-carotene—which naturally protects hair from damaging UV rays.”

Here, he shares five essential tips for sun-proofing your hair to prevent damage and keep tresses looking their best.

Fabian’s 5 Tips for Sun-Proofing Your Hair

1. Rinse hair after swimming.

Salt and chlorine are extra drying to the hair, so give those strands a good rinse as soon as you can after going for a dip in the ocean or pool.

2. Don’t shampoo daily.

Avoid over-shampooing in order to keep those natural oils on your scalp and hair as long as possible. Instead, alternate a wet shampoo with a dry shampoo, like Rahua Voluminous Dry Shampoo. Crafted with plant-based ingredients, the scalp and hair are left clean and refreshed. Also try co-washing with Rahua Voluminous Conditioner.

3. Use leave-in conditioner.

Use a rinse-out conditioner after each shampoo, but be sure to follow-up with a leave-in conditioner as you’ll need to keep strands as hydrated as possible. Misting hair all over with Rahua Hydration Detangler + UV Barrier will not only detangle and tame frizz, but the plant power of Morete oil will create a UV defense barrier to provide color-treated hair with photo protection.

4. Use a hair mask.

Leaving a hair mask on while you are outdoors will offer sun protection as well as in-depth conditioning.  Professional strength Rahua Color Full™ Mask uses an exclusive color protection complex to enhance and protect hair color, as well as provide UV protection thanks to Morete oil.

5. Treat the scalp.

Healthy hair growth begins with a healthy scalp environment. During the summer, the scalp tends to get dry so it’s important to maintain a healthy scalp microbiome. Rahua Founder’s Blend Scalp & Hair Treatment soothes and balances the scalp with rahua, palo santo, and hemp oils, which have anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant properties.
