6 Makeup Tips from Celebrity Makeup Artist Patrick Ta's Shiseido Master Class
Celebrity makeup artist Patrick Ta demonstrates a monochromatic look on model Jordyn Woods.
Patrick Ta, Shiseido’s Global Color Artist, has become the go-to makeup artist for some of the most photographed celebrities in Hollywood—just ask Victoria’s Secret Angels Bella Hadid and Alessandra Ambrosio. His clients include famous faces like Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, Chrissy Teigen and Jenna Dewan. So you know that when Ta teaches a master makeup class, his tips are going to be gold.
Recently, Spa & Beauty Today joined Ta for some makeup schooling focused on J-Beauty secrets with Shiseido’s reimagined textures: gels, inks, powders and dews. The class drew in makeup gurus like Brittany Barragan (@brittanybearmakeup), Gigi Gorgeous (@gigigorgeous), Jen Chae (@frmheadtotoe) and LaLa Milan (@lalamilan).
Inspired by his recent trip to Japan, Ta shared his admiration for the adventurous makeup looks that the women of Tokyo wear and their kawaii makeup styles. “They are super about blush, basically underneath your eyes, to give you that baby-doll ‘drunken’ look. . .and they also love really glittery eyes,” he says.
Ta also demonstrated how to do a full monochromatic makeup look, including how to get those shimmery eyes on model Jordyn Woods, whom you may know as Kylie Jenner’s bestie. Woods revealed that this was her first time getting her makeup done on-stage. But she was in good hands with Ta, who is one of the most talented artists in the beauty industry.
Ta uses Shiseido’s Aura Dew to create a glowing dimensional look.
Ta started Wood’s look with Shiseido’s Aura Dew in Cosmic 03. When the sun hits your skin, this product will give you that wet dewy look. “It’s great as a topper. It can be used on the eyes, the lips, the cheeks —everywhere!” he explains. Tip: Ta uses it to give eyeshadow a kick for a pretty, wet shimmery look when you are blinking.
“I love that it feels super light,” Woods says. Ta also uses Aura Dew for highlighting and shares a tip that will look great on camera: “I like to put highlight just basically on the flattest point but the highest point of the cheekbone.”
Using Shiseido’s InnerGlow CheekPowder in Berry Dawn and Coco Dusk, Ta created a diffused cloud of color on the apples of Woods’ cheeks. “This blush is super pigmented,” he says, adding that a little goes a long way. “To me, it brings color to the face and life to the face.” When he asks Woods if she likes blush, she tells him that she is trying to get more into it. “I can’t lie, Kylie uses the most blush. So she’s the one that actually inspired me to get into it,” she comments.

The look is finished with bold graphic eyeliner using Kajal InkArtist in Tea House, ModernMatte Powder Lipstick in Majo and VisionaryGel Lipstick in Woodstock. Even though Ta has worked with many A-list celebrities, he humbly jokes about getting anxiety when doing things like winged liner and lining lips. And he still gets excited when a client leaves his chair looking great.
6 Makeup Tips from Patrick Ta’s Shiseido Master Class
1. For a dimensional glow that doesn’t take away from the natural skin, use Shiseido’s Aura Glow. I recommend using Aura Dew for highlighter and putting it on the flattest but highest point on the cheekbone.
2. Besides cheeks, put blush on eyelids. Blend out to bring everything together.
3. Avoid looking oily by keeping shine away from smile lines and your chin.
4. When lining lips, start at the center of the Cupid’s bow and work your way to the perimeter. If you’re planning to overdraw, use a matte lipstick.
5. Comb eyebrows up so they look fluffy and natural.
6. Set makeup with a quick mist spray only on the perimeter and only apply powder at the center.
