Beauty Boss: Ceata E. Lash, Founder and Inventor of PuffCuff

Ceata E. Lash.

Our latest Beauty Boss is Ceata E. Lash, Founder and Inventor of PuffCuff—an innovative hair clip that makes it easy to achieve different stylish looks without causing discomfort or stressing curly hair. Unlike most hair accessories on the market that are only designed for straight and thin hair, PuffCuff is great for a wide range of curly hair types ranging from 2c to 4c without damaging hair or causing tension headaches.

Beauty Boss: Nyakio Grieco, Co-Founder of Thirteen Lune

Lash is the first and only African American woman to hold four U.S. patents in the natural hair accessory industry, and she has received many awards and accolades over the years including the President’s Innovation Award from Sally Beauty. She was also a member of the inaugural Amazon Black Business Accelerator Cohort, and was named as one of the top 200 female founders by Inc. Magazine.

Since launching in 2013, Lash has expanded the line to include PuffCuffs in different sizes and colors, in addition to several haircare products and hairstyling tools. We chatted with Lash who shared the inspiration behind the brand, secrets for success, beauty tips, and much more.

When was PuffCuff founded and what does the name mean?

PuffCuff was founded in August 2013. The name came to me in a dream, meaning you are cuffing your puff.

What inspired the creation of the brand?

In the Fall of 2011, I was blessed to have my 99-year-old grandmother come to live with my family and me. She had been diagnosed with congestive heart failure and was close to death. My grandmother was my heart and I loved her dearly. In our quiet moments together, I often wondered, “Did she do everything she wanted to in her long life? Did she pursue all her dreams?”

The answer was a resounding and confident “Yes.” She was at total peace in knowing her time was at hand. So I thought, ‘Would I be at peace with how my life turned out if the Lord blessed me to live to her age?” Knowing I might not get 99 years, if I put this idea on the shelf and left it there, I might not have the same kind of peace my grandmother had when death was imminent.

I decided I had to try, at the very least. If I failed, it wouldn’t be for a lack of trying. So here I am! PuffCuff LLC was launched in August 2013. The first PuffCuff was available for purchase on Amazon in February 2014.

PuffCuff is an innovative line of hair clips that make it easy to achieve different stylish looks without causing discomfort or stressing curly hair.

Does PuffCuff have a hero product?

The OG, or as it's commonly known, the ORIGINAL PuffCuff, stands as our hero product. It's not just a fan favorite—it's also the very first design we created. It's the flagship of our brand!

What are your favorite products from your brand?

Well, the ORIGINAL PuffCuff is a favorite, naturally. But as my hair has grown longer, I find myself gravitating toward the JUNIOR size more. Since I can gather my hair into a smaller circle, the JUNIOR gives my puff more height. After that, the TangleMaster Detangling Brush and LAAAYED Firm Hold Edge Control are on my list of favorites.

Where are your products sold?

Our products are available on our website, Amazon, SallyBeauty.com, Target.com, and Macys.com. They are also available in all Sally Beauty retail stores in the U.S. and Canada. We are about to launch in TJ Maxx and Marshalls, along with small private retailers and online boutiques in 80 countries. Our diffusion line is in H.E.B. Texas stores and will soon be in Forever 21.

Future plans for the brand?

First on the agenda: I'm planning an equity raise in 2024. Following that, I'm set to launch two new versions of the PuffCuff. Then I'm targeting $5 million in earnings before considering taxes, interest, and amortization. The big picture? A strategic exit in four years. That's the game plan moving forward.

PuffCuff is available in different sizes and colors including black and clear.

Who inspires you?

Sarah Blakely of Spanx originally inspired my business model, and I've patterned my company after hers. However, my current inspiration comes from Michelle Rodriguez of Mielle Organics and Richelieu Dennis of SheaMoisture. They successfully sold their companies specializing in wet consumable hair products for multi-million dollar deals. I aspire to break new ground by becoming the first African American woman to sell a styling tool company in a similar fashion.

Secret to success?

My secret to success is simple but effective. Connect with those who have already walked your path—they'll help you see what's ahead. Build a solid team you can rely on, make sure you have access to the capital you need, and never underestimate the power of a good nap. It's all part of the plan.

Beauty secrets?

I'm only now beginning a beauty regimen at 51 years old, noticing the impact of stress on my face. So, I'm taking a more mindful approach by drinking more water and paying extra attention to my skin care. It's all part of taking better care of myself.

Wellness tips?

Indulging in massages, embracing the power of prayer, taking mental health days, saying “No” when needed, enjoying a facial, and diving into resistance training are all ways I prioritize self-care. Oh, and drinking more water is always a must. Topping it all off, nothing beats a family vacation to recharge. It's my personal formula for a balanced life.

Best advice?

Begin with forging connections with fellow entrepreneurs who share your mindset, and seasoned professionals who can guide you to your ultimate goal. Have a clear plan, become best friends with your data, trust your inner voice, safeguard your money, and always find ways to give back. To me, these are the foundational principles for success.
