Beauty Boss: Dr. Jonathan Leary, Founder and CEO of Remedy Place
Our latest Beauty Boss is Dr. Jonathan Leary, Founder and CEO of Remedy Place—the world’s first social wellness club with locations in West Hollywood, CA and New York. Featuring a chic, luxe design that includes elements of wabi-sabi (a Japanese aesthetic centered around finding beauty in imperfection), both spaces offer innovative services like ice baths and IV therapy to speed up recovery, enhance health, and improve physical and mental well-being.
Meet Remedy Place, LA’s New Social Wellness Club
The flagship space in New York consists of a two-story club with different areas and lounges where guests can connect, gather, work, and attend or host events. In addition to a retail component that features different wellness products, Remedy Place also serves healthy alcohol-free drinks served by nutritional bartenders, snacks, and other wellness ingestibles that have various benefits such as decreasing inflammation, offering people a place where they can socialize while sticking to their health goals.
Wellness Club Profile: Remedy Place
We chatted with Dr. Leary who shared the inspiration behind Remedy Place, secrets for success, wellness tips, and much more.
When was Remedy Place founded and what does the name mean?
Remedy Place, although its concept was initially conceived in 2012, officially opened its first club at the end of 2019. The name "Remedy Place" has a straightforward and meaningful connotation: it signifies a destination designed for healing. My aspiration is for Remedy Place to become your "third place," and the logo's small "PL" mirrors the format of a street sign, symbolizing the path to a place of remedy and feel better.
What inspired the creation of a social wellness club?
The inspiration behind the creation of the first social wellness club was born out of a concerning trend in people's health, exacerbated by the impact of their social lives.
Over the years, I worked closely with my patients to address the root causes of their health issues, which frequently required significant lifestyle changes. While these changes led to remarkable improvements in their well-being, I was always told: "Dr. Leary, I feel incredible now, but this new lifestyle is isolating. Social interactions often revolve around temptation or unhealthy choices." This consistent feedback over five years constantly reminded me about the need for Remedy Place to be more than just a wellness club—it needed to be a place where improved health and social life could harmoniously coexist.
The solution: Remedy Place introduces what we term "Social Substitutions.” Here, guests can enjoy experiences, whether it's for date nights, meetings, after-work gatherings, Sunday fundays, birthdays, or other events—all while prioritizing their health and enhancing their connections with others. We've coined this approach "Social Self-Care TM," defined as the practice of deepening human connections and promoting well-being through shared experiences.
Does Remedy Place have a signature or popular service?
It's hard to pinpoint a single signature or most popular offering among our experiences. Our members and guests often find their personal favorites based on what makes them feel their best or effectively counters the stressors they are seeking relief from that day, but they are pretty evenly utilized.
That said, our ice bath classes have gotten significant attention, both within our community and online. We created the world’s first commercialized breath work ice bath classes, and this innovation has resonated all over the world. In fact, some credit us with kickstarting the ice bath movement that has happened over the past couple of years.
Lastly, while we highly value the privacy of our community, it's worth noting that numerous celebrities have had their first ice bath experience with us, which has contributed to the growing popularity of this practice.
What are your favorite services?
It's a tough choice because everything at Remedy Place holds a special place for me since I personally use everything. However, if I were to pick just one, it would have to be our ice bath class. In my current busy life, every minute counts, and ice baths offer the quickest way to make a significant impact on my overall well-being. They provide a rapid shift, benefiting me mentally, emotionally, and physically, and I'm not aware of anything else that can bring about such a profound change in such a short amount of time.
How many locations do you have and where?
Right now we have two clubs open (LA and NYC) and two clubs in the works!
Who inspires you?
Apple, Restoration Hardware (Gary Freedman), and Soho House.
Secret to success?
Passion and Purpose: Success is often linked to doing what you are passionate about. When you love what you do, you are more likely to put in the time and effort required to excel.
Hard Work: There's no substitute for hard work. At the end of the day it is always going to be who works smarter and harder and who wants it more.
Be a Good Person: Be considerate, always do the right thing, and shine as bright as you can. I always say attract, don’t chase.
Your Health: The healthier you are the smarter, happier, creative, and capable you are. Not only does being healthy and feeling good ripple into every aspect of your life, but I have seen the more I push the limits with my health, the faster I have been able to shift my potential and shine brighter.
Human Connection: Surround yourself with people that enhance you or bring the best out of you. Protect your energy and prioritize surrounding yourself with people you look up to, can learn from, and love.
Innovate: Don’t copy and try to uniquely create a solution to a problem. Being present within yourself and looking inwards will allow you to tap into your superpower.
Beauty secrets?
Fix your deficiencies, eat as clean as possible, move every day, sleep, hydrate, and do as much self-care as you can. Honestly, the healthier you are, the more beautiful you will be and feel. It truly starts from within.
Wellness tips?
You are in control of your health—no one else! Here are a couple things I follow:
My Physical Health
Move every day. Working out is not about being strong and powerful, it is about being functional and pain-free.
Look at everything you put in or on your body and realize that each thing is either fueling or fighting disease.
Eat less and stay away from foods that cause inflammation.
Drink water!
Track your data to know what is best for you.
Get functional medicine blood work every 6 to 12 months to fully understand your body and how to take care of it. (From hormones, to micronutrients to food sensitivities to toxicity levels).
Get in an ice bath at least every other day.
Get an IV at least once a month.
Minimize alcohol (or fully cut it out).
Try not to eat within 2 to 3 hours of bed.
Try to walk after each meal.
Take supplements only to supplement your diet or to fix your deficiencies found in your blood work.
Get body work—whether adjustments, muscle work, cupping, etc.
Explore any self-care practice or technology that makes you feel good and make it part of your routine!
Go to bed around the same time every night, get the right amount of horus and make sure to not use your phone before bed or directly when you wake up.
My Mental Health
Surround yourself with people that make you feel good and push you to be better.
Find daily time to say words of affirmations.
Find daily time to manifest and visualize.
Put more power behind my thoughts, make them come true.
Check on goals and accomplishments at the beginning of each month.
Set your mindset and thoughts to be the person you are going to be in the future, instead of the person you are today.
Future plans for the brand?
Remedy Place's future plans evolve almost every month. While I'd love to share all the exciting plans, I can tell you that our core mission is to make the world feel better by creating healing environments that give people a new healthy way to socialize. Besides scaling our clubs across the country, you can expect to see Remedy Place branching out into various other verticals. This includes our Tech-Remedy and Home Collections, a focus on education and media, and much more. Our aim is to continue innovating and to lead by example to inevitably change the way people take care of themselves.
Best advice?
Be greater than your environment (that’s called change). Find joy in being uncomfortable, it just means growth. Or same as above to not chase anything in life, always attract.
Favorite way to relax?
By being present and enjoying time with people that I love.
