New York Spa Guide: The Best Spas in Brooklyn
We chatted with Baratashvilli who shared her favorite beauty and wellness tips, secrets for success, best advice, and much more.
When did you open your massage studio and do you see clients anywhere else besides NYC?
I opened my first massage studio in the vibrant city of New York in 2017. While this is my main base, I extend my service beyond NYC, catering to clients seeking my specialized wellness approach. I regularly see my clients in Los Angeles, the Hamptons, and Connecticut.
How long have you been in the industry and what inspired you to become a massage therapist?
I boast an extensive career spanning decades within the industry. A profound belief in the transformative power of touch ignited my journey as a massage therapist. Observing the positive impact of massage on both physical and mental well-being propelled me to dedicate my career to facilitating others' experience of the healing benefits of therapeutic touch.
Over my 35-year tenure in bodywork, a synthesis of personal experiences, research, and a profound interest in alternative therapies has led me toward transformative practices; exploring holistic well-being sparked my interest in lymphatic drainage and acupuncture.
Additionally, professional training and collaboration with field experts, including studying acupuncture and massage in China, have enriched my expertise. My professional background encompasses diverse settings such as day spas, athletic clubs, ballet theaters, private practice, chiropractic clinics, and physical therapy offices, providing me with valuable and varied experiences.
Do you incorporate any special techniques? What sets your massage apart from others?
I often describe my massage technique as a carefully crafted approach that transforms the body internally and externally by integrating lymphatic drainage, muscle work, and cupping. Drawing on my extensive knowledge of human movement and my experience as a dancer, I profoundly understand how the body functions and heals. I combine traditional and innovative techniques acquired through years of working and learning in various countries.
This wealth of knowledge allows me to blend Eastern and Western approaches, tailoring a personalized experience for each client. Beyond addressing chronic pain and relieving tired muscles, my unique treatments also focus on softening the body, soothing the nervous system, reducing swelling, and expediting the elimination of metabolic waste. Notably, clients occasionally seek my services post-cosmetic surgery to reduce swelling.
What are the benefits of regular massage and how often do you recommend getting them?
Regular massages offer numerous benefits including stress reduction, improved circulation, and enhanced flexibility. The frequency of massages is contingent on individual health goals. A general recommendation is to commence with sessions close together and then transition to a maintenance schedule of once a month for ongoing benefits. The first 10 sessions should be consecutive; after that, you enter a maintenance mode, and one can do massage two to three times per week.
After one month of treatment, you can see how the contours change. The process of transitioning each muscle into an active phase is time-intensive. Massage plays a pivotal role in this transformation by effectively eliminating dead epithelium, augmenting the oxygen supply, and restoring blood supply function. Consequently, muscles can assume their responsibility for fulfilling their designated functions.
Future plans for your business?
I envision establishing Marina Massages as a holistic hub for overall well-being. I aim to continue being a beacon of healing and transformation for my clients in the East and West Coasts.
Who inspires you?
My inspiration emanates from pioneers in the wellness industry, particularly influential women dedicated to advancing the understanding and practice of holistic health. Furthermore, my clients inspire me daily, as their personal journeys and stories fuel my commitment to making a positive impact through my work.
Secret to success?
The key to success lies in a genuine passion for one's work, an unwavering commitment to continuous improvement, and, above all, the ability to connect with and positively impact the lives of those you serve.
Beauty secrets?
Beauty, in my view, is an outward reflection of inner well-being. Maintaining hydration, engaging in regular workouts, and embracing the rejuvenating effects of massage play integral roles in maintaining a healthy and radiant appearance.
Wellness tips?
Prioritizing self-care, both physically and mentally, is paramount. Embracing a balanced lifestyle that includes regular exercise, nourishing food, and moments of relaxation fosters a harmonious and fulfilling life. Remember that: a) Consistency is key, where regular maintenance of the lymphatic system and muscles through practices like massage contributes significantly to long-term health benefits, and b) Holistic Approach, integrating different wellness practices, such as acupuncture and lymphatic drainage, creates a comprehensive strategy for enhancing overall well-being by addressing multiple aspects of health.
Best advice?
Listen to your body and honor its signals. Understanding and responding to your body's cues are fundamental to sustained well-being, whether it's the need for rest, nourishment or rejuvenation. Furthermore, fostering moments of laughter contributes to overall wellness. In pursuing optimal health, let love and laughter be our guiding lights, illuminating our path with brightness and positivity.
Favorite way to relax?
Personally, I find relaxation in nature, whether it's a beautiful day at the beach or a rejuvenating hike in the mountains. Watching sunsets is my ultimate relaxation, providing a profound reason to be grateful for life.
