Beauty Boss: Catherine Gore, President of Biossance
Our latest Beauty Boss is Catherine Gore, President of Biossance—a line of skin care that draws on a rich history of science and sustainability, featuring only the most trustworthy and powerful ingredients. In 2003, scientists for Biossance’s parent company, Amyris, developed patented technology inside its Berkeley, California labs that allowed them to create an accessible cure for malaria.
Inspired to continue to use innovative biotechnology to make a positive impact on the world, Biossance turned to skin care and created a line of products that are incredibly effective and safe without harming animals or the environment. One of the brand’s key ingredients is squalane, which comes from 100% plant-based, renewable sugarcane that is bio-fermented to create an incredibly hydrating skin moisturizer.
We spoke with Gore, who discussed her journey in the industry, shared favorite beauty and wellness tips, best advice, and more.
How long have you been with Biossance?
One year.
What inspired you to join the company?
I was inspired by the mission of the brand, which is to educate the world on sustainable, clean skin care while also achieving your best skin ever.
Tell us about your journey in the industry.
I was one of the first employees of Sephora and then helped build a brand division of the company called Kendo, which included launching brands like Kat Von D, Ole Henriksen Skincare, Marc Jacobs Beauty, etc. From there, I joined Biossance.
What are some of your responsibilities in your current role?
As President, I’m responsible for the overall strategy of the brand, from product to marketing and beyond. Most importantly, my role is to lead and guide my amazing team to be the best that they can be.
Does Biossance have a hero product?
Yes, it’s the Vitamin C Rose Oil. I don’t think there’s a better, more effective combination of vitamin C out there. And the rose scent is amazing!
What’s your favorite product from the brand?
My favorite product right now is Squalane + Phyto-Retinol Serum. It’s our plant-derived, Bakuchiol-based retinol alternative that acts like retinol without the side effects. I’ve seen an unbelievable improvement in my skin texture, dark spots, and wrinkles. I’m obsessed!
Where are Biossance products sold?
Who inspires you?
My mom is the queen of kindness, elegance, and optimism—all at the same time.
Secrets to success?
Passion, including an ever-flowing curiosity for the beauty industry, products, and formulas.
Public speaking. The ability to command a room and feeling comfortable in large audiences has given me so much in my career—it’s been priceless.
Great mentors. Nothing beats learning from the best and I have been incredibly lucky to learn from the best.
Beauty secrets?
Follow a full skincare routine every day–it’s amazing how preventative and reparative a great skincare routine can be.
Spend time to find your perfect red lipstick. A great red lipstick looks stunning on women.
Don’t overdo highlighter.
Visine always brightens and opens the eyes, especially if you’re going out for the night— pictures will turn out better with whiter eyes. The same goes with teeth—a little bit of teeth whitener goes a long way.
Wellness tips?
Laughter. Find people and things that make you laugh. Seek them out. It really is the best medicine.
Best advice?
“Take care of your friends, family, and health first, and all other things (including your job) will fall into place.” Advice courtesy of my father.
Favorite way to relax?
Usually it’s a tall glass of wine with my husband on a beach somewhere, hopefully post-surfing or paddle-boarding. (I’m not an expert yet on surfing but I love being out on the water!)
