#BeautyBoss: Heath Wilson, Founder of Heathmade Los Angeles
This week’s #BeautyBoss is Heath Wilson, Founder of Heathmade Los Angeles—a line of cleansing and soothing skincare products made out of simple and plant-based ingredients. The 9-year-old’s entrepreneurial journey began at the age of four when he attended a week-long potions lab, where he learned about the healing power of plants, herbs and aromatics. He made his first sale at a school fair selling hand-crafted, alcohol-free hand sanitizer, which became his signature product.
Over the course of five years, Wilson’s apothecary interests grew as he quickly developed skills crafting products with ingredients such as essential oils, plant butters and other natural ingredients. His line has expanded to include an array of natural, cruelty-free products such as lotion bars, lip balms, deodorant, a healing balm, and hand sanitizer. And throughout the month of April 2020, he donated product proceeds to No Kid Hungry, a national campaign run by Share Our Strength—a nonprofit working to solve problems of hunger and poverty in the United States and around the world.
“While I have been fortunate to keep busy during this uncertain time, I recognize many businesses and schools are suffering,” says Wilson. “After talking it over with my family, I decided to make a donation to No Kid Hungry, a non-profit organization that ensures kids who count on the meals they receive at school, continue to get the food they need to be healthy.”
We chatted with Wilson, who shares the inspiration behind the brand, secrets to success, favorite wellness tips, and more.
When was Heathmade founded and what does the name mean?
Heathmade, originally Hands by Heath, was founded in 2014 when I was in pre-kindergarten. Heathmade basically means made by me—Heath.
What inspired the creation of the brand?
Two things inspired the creation of the brand: first, my curiosity about nature; and second, batching hand sanitizer for my school's first Entrepreneurial Fair.
Does Heathmade have a hero product?
Of course, it does! The hero of the brand is my signature hand sanitizer.
What are your favorite products from the brand?
My favorite product is Remedy—a natural Neosporin because I get bug bites and it helps heal my skin faster.
Where are your products sold?
My products are sold on my website, and in various retail shops and online stores throughout the country.
Future plans for the brand?
We have plans to grow the brand and scale up for major national stores. Also, we have a few more innovations to bring to the market.
Secret to success?
Try your best, stay focused, and be proud of what you've done.
Who inspires you?
My mom inspires me every day, pretty much.
Beauty secrets?
My beauty secrets are essential oils and 9.5 to 10 hours of sleep daily.
Wellness tips?
Always stay curious and wash your hands.
Best advice?
When you lose you learn, and when you learn you win.
How do you like to relax?
I like to relax by meditating and by falling asleep while watching a show.
