Beauty Bosses: June and Rochelle Jacobs of Naturally Serious and June Jacobs Skincare
Our lates Beauty Bosses are June and Rochelle Jacobs, the mother-daughter duo behind Naturally Serious, an all-natural skincare line that is cleanly made, ethically developed and clinically tested—and June Jacobs, a line centered on highly-efficacious, natural ingredients formulated to deliver immediate, impactful results with long-term benefits.
For more than 30 years, June has been a world-renowned spa visionary and beauty/wellness expert. As the founder and CEO of both lines, along with her daughter, Rochelle, Managing Director of Naturally Serious and June Jacobs Skincare, June has created cutting-edge products for ultimate skin health and wellness that can be found at some of the world’s most prestigious spas, resorts, and select speciality retailers worldwide. To maintain the highest levels of quality and standards in manufacturing, June also opened an independent laboratory, June Jacobs Labs, where all of her products are manufactured.
We chatted with the mother and daughter team who discuss their second skincare line, share beauty and wellness tips, best advice, success secrets, and more.
When was Naturally Serious founded?
August 2018.
What inspired the creation of the brand?
RJ: Consumers are showing a great interest and need for a more sustainable lifestyle, and this also means ensuring that their beauty products are fitting into this emerging category while still expecting and achieving great results. We at Naturally Serious wanted to create a brand that was not only efficacious and made up of cleanly made and ethically developed formulations, but also translated that same message through our packaging, and we did just that.
Clean, for us, is quite intense. So when we branched out to create an even cleaner line, Naturally Serious, it meant creating a non-toxic product that is made ethically, with environmental protection stemming to UV rays, pollution, and free radical damage, and with an ever-evolving list of BAD (Bad, Ambiguous, Debatable) Ingredients linked from harmful health effects to plain-old skin irritation.
To us, clean skincare means not compromising from the ground up and in that same breath, still making an effective product—from the ingredients in our formulas to the eco-friendly packaging they are placed.
Does Naturally Serious have a hero product?
RJ: Two of our most popular products are the Skin Warrior Anti-Pollution Repair Cream and Get Even Cold-Pressed Peel Pads.
What are your favorite products from your brand?
RJ: “We have more than one—are you surprised? Our new Illumi-nation Anti-Fatigue Power Serum is just about the coolest serum I have tried. Totally obsessed.
JJ: One of my favorites is the Naturally Serious Get Even Cold-Pressed Peel Pads, as they are innovative in a way of producing enzymatic, exfoliating activity purely from a natural pomegranate enzyme and are produced with a cold pressed technique, where heat is never added to the formulation process.
I also love the Skin Warrior Anti-Pollution Repair Cream for its ability to protect against pollution, external aggressors and future environmental damage, all while helping to repair existing skin issues such as fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone and texture.
Lastly, my other favorite is our Lip Service 3-In-1 Lip Serum, a lip serum that has a three-in-one effect: renewing, restoring hydration and soothing skin to plump fine lines, soothe texture, and act as a primer for lip color and balm.
Who inspires you?
JJ: All of the women in my family who used antioxidant ingredients to create their own skin care. They were the inspiration behind my first skincare line, June Jacobs, and will forever be the inspiration in every product and line we create here.
RJ: I’m inspired by the people I meet—while traveling, in a line, on social media, and especially all my friends and family. Watching how everyone deals with and manages their own personal struggles is something I learn from and am inspired by. In return, I always say if I can give one woman the confidence she needs to feel better about herself and help her manage through own struggles, we’ve done our job!
Secret to success?
JJ & RJ: Never give up!
Wellness tips?
JJ: Exercise. Specifically, for me, cycling around NYC—sweating out toxins regularly because a healthy inside equals a healthy outside!
RJ: Yoga, yoga, and then some yoga! It’s truly changed my life. I say making the best choices when given the option has also made living a ‘well’ life. Sometimes these choices may be viewed as selfish, but in the long run, these make you live a better life. Making time for yourself. Never shortchange yourself of time for you.
Best advice?
JJ: Dream it, dare it, do it.
RJ: I learned a lot of this directly from my mother but most of the time it was watching her versus advice she’s given me:
Make the impossible possible and persevere.
Make mistakes. And make sure you learn from your mistakes as well as others so you don’t make the same ones again.
Most importantly, remember, or should I say, don’t forget…most of the time everything always works out. It may not be how you envisioned it to be but it does.
Don’t be ruled by your fears—when approaching something ask yourself, What’s the worst thing that can happen? Generally, that answer is actually more manageable than the fear you have in your head.
Favorite ways to relax?
RJ: I guess to me, relaxing and wellness overlap a bit. Both my mother and I love riding our bikes—I find it so invigorating. I practice yoga as often as I can, everywhere and anywhere. This helps keep me grounded, as well as relieving some unavoidable stress. It’s also a keen reminder of how lucky we are to wake up each morning and I’m blessed to call NYC my home. I believe that beauty starts from within and a healthy body equals a healthy mind (and healthy skin!)
