A renegade entrepreneur and self-care enthusiast, Dakota Hills believes in the triple bottom line approach in business: people, planet, and profit. Sustainability and impact have been woven into the core of Dakota’s past and current business endeavors and are a non-negotiable for partnerships. When Dakota dreamed up the concept of Moon Bath, she knew she needed to partner with someone who had the plant knowledge.

As a Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner, herbal alchemist and fellow entrepreneur, Sierra Brashear was the perfect match. Her work is rooted in the belief that when you care for yourself, you are better able to care for your family, community, and the planet. After joining forces, the two ladies created Moon Bath—a product line inspired by the rhythms of nature that combines ancient wisdom with modern intuitive alchemy to curate earth-integrated bathing rituals. The woman-owned and operated business is based out of Boulder, Colorado with a focus on environmental and social sustainability.

“Together, we created a company that is committed to working toward the vision of a more just and sustainable world,” say Hills and Brashear. “Impact and giving back is the foundation of our brand. We want to use our business (and our voices) as a force for good in the world. We understand that being connected to nature and to each other is essential to our individual health and collective well-being.”

We chatted with Hills and Brashear, who shared the inspiration behind the brand, favorite products, future plans, and more.

When was Moon Bath founded and what’s the meaning behind the name?

Moon Bath was born in Spring 2017 and the name beamed in from the stars during a yoga class the morning after taking our first Moon Bath. We had created a special bath to honor the Full Moon and it was out of our desire to share this with the world that the business was created. We love how the name has double meanings—to take a Moon Bath ritual aligned with the lunar cycle and to literally bathe in the moonlight, which is an ancient Ayurvedic ritual.

Tell us more about your products and what makes them special.

Our concept and line are inspired by Ayurveda, which is India’s ancient science of evoking inner health by aligning with the elements and the rhythms of nature. Simple and organic, our products contain no synthetic chemicals or preservatives—because those don’t belong on our skin. The ethos of the modern bathing renaissance is to move beyond bathing as simply cleansing ourselves, and toward bathing as an opportunity to drink in the varied benefits of plant medicine through our body’s largest organ, our skin.

We believe in merging the mystical with science and understanding how to receive the most potent benefits of what plants have to offer. As such, we recommend brewing our Bath Tea outside of the tub and allowing it to steep in order to unlock the medical benefits from the botanicals. Once steeped, you strain and pour the infusion into the tub. We even sell a glass and copper Moon Bath French Press so you can really enjoy the process of watching the botanicals come back to life when you add water.

Do you have a hero product?

All of our products are inspired by things we use and love. Our Botanical Bath Teas are our hero product, as they were the first born child of Moon Bath and the spirit behind the brand. Designed to connect bathers with the lunar cycle, our Lunar Blends amplify the potent energy available during each phase of the moon. We love the idea of finding new ways to absorb the benefits of plant medicine and soaking in herb-infused waters harkens back on an ancient practice revered by the bathing beauty, Queen Cleopatra.

What’s your favorite product from the line?

Our EVERY BODY Grounding Body Oil is another fave, especially because we live in the dry climate of Colorado and adorning our bodies head to toe pre-bath or post shower is a must! Let’s be real though, self oil massage is ideal for every body, no matter where you live, as it is perhaps one of the most nourishing ways we can honor our bodies and minds.

Because we’re all part of the hustle, the ether and air elements within our bodies are elevated and craving to be soothed. By calming these elements within us, the practice of self oil massage hydrates the skin, lubricates the joints, improves digestion, and relaxes the nervous system. EVERY BODY is a blend of grounding and nourishing oils that leaves you feeling calm, connected, and restored. It combines high antioxidant healing oils with the light, gender-neutral scent of sandalwood and cypress.

This elegant French Press from Moon Bath ($65) is the perfect vessel in which to brew your Botanical Bath Tea.
