The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend washing hands with soap and water whenever possible in order to reduce the amount of germs, chemicals and bacteria that are on our hands. If you don’t have access to soap and water but need to cleanse your hands, using a hand sanitizer can help reduce the number of germs that are spread.

According to CDC, it is recommended to use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol to help kill germs. And while alcohol-based hand sanitizers can help reduce the number of microbes on hands, they do not necessarily eliminate all types of germs. Ideally, you should carry a hand sanitizer around with you when going to public places like the grocery store, then later wash your hands with soap and water when you can.
