I Tried Aquatic Therapy and a La Mer Facial for Full-Body Relaxation at Le Barthélemy Hotel and Spa in St Barts

I spent three days soaking up wellness in an unexpected locale: the glitzy, party-centric island of Le Barthelemy at Le Barthélemy Hotel and Spa.

The Best Spas in the Caribbean

This beachside resort with a heart of well-being was the perfect home base. On each day, I enjoyed a different experience to rejuvenate the face, body, and mind. Le Spa at Le Barthelemy itself was refined and dreamy.

The focal point, a pyramid atrium, gives a sneak peek of what’s to come before you set foot inside.

I passed the skylight, which juts up at ground level just beyond to the infinity pool, on my way to the staircase leading to the subterranean oasis.

It opens up after the stairs with sunlight streaming down and illuminates the sitting area and welcoming reception desk.

Four treatment rooms and the Nordic Pools area complete the serene space.

Design elements like rock walls, smooth neutral-hued floors, and pops of turquoise add to the surprisingly light and airy below-ground location.

I started from the top with a classic facial. All treatments include products from Crème de La Mer for a luxurious skin experience with the healing power of the sea.

The treatment room was chic and modern with fiber optics hanging from the ceiling that created the effect of a starry sky enjoyed in the rare moments eyes are open to take it in.

I opted for the La Mer Hydrating Facial, which it was the perfect antidote to my long journey to the Caribbean island (three flights starting with a redeye).

After a thorough double-cleansing with The Cleansing Oil followed by The Cleansing Foam to remove impurities while protecting the skin’s barrier, my face was enveloped in a warm towel wrapped to prepare skin for the next step.

Then, a pure infusion of the Miracle Broth proprietary extract was combined with La Mer’s lifting and energizing massage techniques called the waves of transformation massage.

This unique facial massage that imitates the motion of the sea helped to energize and deeply hydrate skin instantly and created lasting glow to relieve muscle tension and promote improved circulation.

The esthetician customized it to my skin’s needs and it was over before I knew it. Time flies when you’re utterly relaxed! I emerged with a glowing, plump complexion and no sign whatsoever of any air travel.

With refreshed and rejuvenated skin, I lingered and enjoyed the Nordic Baths. The Vitality Pools include three different tubs at varying temperatures (one hot soak at 100 °F and two cold plunges at 52°F and 41°F) as well as a sauna and steam room.

Then, I dipped into the pool for an immersive service on day two. The Atma Janzu experience goes far deeper than the brochure description. While it definitely releases pressure in arms, legs, and core thanks to floating in a pool and the skilled technique of the therapist, it does so much more mentally and emotionally.

Before dipping into the pool, the therapist talked me through what to expect and what sensations might arise. It wasn’t uncommon to fully release the body, including vomiting and urinating (yes, in the pool). Decidedly not chic, but au natural I suppose.

I was hesitant after hearing about these reactions, but hoped mine would be smooth sailing and only tense muscles would release. He asked me to silently center myself and make an intention for the session.

He attached floaties to my ankles and supported my upper body to stay afloat at the surface of the water. With rhythmic and increasing intensity he swirled me around the pool, twisting and adding pressure to target tight muscles and tension.

Then, just as he said he would, he gently tipped my head underwater. My instant reaction was to tense and stay strictly on the surface, so that’s where I remained. I worried I missed out on a significant part of the treatment by not submerging completely, but it felt right for me at the time.

As he continued pulling me around the pool in big and small circles, I felt my neck and back release and relax in a totally new way. I also felt a swirling in my stomach and worried my breakfast buffet was resurfacing. Thankfully it settled and the treatment came to a calm conclusion with clean waters all around.

Honestly, the last thing I was thinking about was the stretching and decompressing of my muscles as I sat on the stairs preparing to emerge from the water and go on with my day. My therapist sat with me as I transitioned back to solid ground emotionally and physically. I felt lighter and freer, as if I had unburdened much more than the knots buried in my shoulder blades.

Last but not least, I woke up early for group poolside yoga at one of the adjoining villas. The class included a flow that challenged strength and balance and connected mind and body. In fact, the series of poses moved at least one of my companions to tears.

I must have raved openly about my facial, because my turn-down service included a travel-friendly sample of La Mer Moisturizing Fresh Cream on the final night. After my three-day reset, I boarded the plane refreshed and equipped to keep the glow going back at home.
