I Used Althaea Skin's CARA Multi-Modal Tool for 28 Days — Here's How It Went
As a beauty editor for 30+ years, I’ve tested hundreds of skincare products. Some have lived up to the hype. Others not so much. So, when I heard about Althaea Skin, a revolutionary new brand from renowned medical researcher and celebrity dermatologist Dr. Ava Shamban that regulates your skin’s clock genes, I was intrigued.
First, let’s talk about the science behind the brand. Recent groundbreaking research has discovered that skin has its own circadian rhythm that influences key functions, such as cell regeneration, hydration levels, and barrier protection.
Biological and environmental stressors can easily deregulate these cycles, causing skin to look tired and fatigued, and causing common skin care woes like dryness, dullness, and fine lines and wrinkles.
Through advanced research, clinically proven ingredients, and innovative skin technology, Althaea Skin has overcome the limitations of traditional skincare by supporting the circadian rhythm of the skin around the clock.
Cutting-edge, time-targeted formulas and the CARA multi-energy device help support these natural biological renewal processes to correct dysregulation, amplify rejuvenation, and create the optimum environment for radiant, youthful skin.

CARA integrates Radio Frequency, EMS, and dual-wavelength LED to rewind visible signs of aging, stimulate collagen and elastic synthesis, and improve tone, clarity, and suppleness. This first-in-class multi-modal tool mirrors the synergistic approach of Dr. Shamban’s in-clinic treatments.
Radio Frequency Gentle thermal energy that supports collagen remodeling
EMS Targeted stimulation to re-educate and tone facial muscles
Red & Blue LED Wavelength-specific light that enhances cellular performance and promotes a balanced, healthier-looking complexion
Day 1
After charging the CARA for six hours, I was ready for my first treatment. It’s important to start with clean skin. Next, apply the Night Serum, a powerful anti-aging and reparative treatment that works while you sleep. The formula is enriched with a shitake mushroom-based extract that visibly firms and tightens the skin, and squalane, which strengthens the skin barrier and locks in hydration.
Since it increases collagen production, visibly reduces fine lines and wrinkles, and enhances the natural regeneration processes overnight, I did each treatment at bedtime. The Activation Mask, which is infused with hyaluronic acid and squalene, is essential to provide optimal conduction between the tool and your skin.
There are three settings: Clarify (treats acne-prone or irritated skin), Activate (revitalizes tired, fatigued skin), and Restore (anti-aging and firming). I used both the Activate and Restore settings exclusively, alternating between the two. The CARA is designed to operate for 10 minutes before automatically shutting off. Once the cycle is started, it must be completed.
Day 14
I had been using the CARA faithfully every other day for two weeks when I met a friend for brunch at the Channel Islands Harbor near Oxnard, California. We were seated outside, and I noticed that she was looking at me with more than passing interest.
“Your skin looks amazing,” she said. “What have you been doing?”
So, I told her all about CARA, my new best friend.
Day 28
The epidermis, which is the outer layer of skin, replaces itself every 28 to 40 days with new cells traveling to the surface where they are shed as dead skin. In older adults (I’m a boomer so I guess I qualify), the process may take longer.
So, I wanted to give myself at least 28 days before drawing any conclusions about whether or not my skin looked better than it did when I started. Not only did my skin felt plumper and firmer after each treatment, but people began noticing the improvement even before I did, especially if they hadn’t seen me for a few weeks or more.
I’m now slavishly devoted to Althaea Skin and my weekly sessions with CARA. My skin hasn’t looked this good in years. The CARA Multi-Modal Tool Kit is $350, which may seem pricey until you consider what you’d pay for a similar treatment in a dermatologist’s office.
Do the math, and order one for yourself. You won’t be sorry.
The CARA Multi-Modal Tool retails for $350. Buy it on Althaea Skin’s website. For the latest news, follow on Instagram: @althaea.skin
