Salon Spotlight: Maggie Rose Salon
It can be difficult finding a salon that caters to black or textured hair, as not all hairstylists are trained to handle these hair types. Fortunately, there are places like Maggie Rose Salon that are giving more ladies of color representation in the beauty industry by empowering them and helping them look and feel their very best.
Located in Miami, Maggie Rose Salon is a boutique full-service, healthy hair salon that was founded by Jamila Powell—an entrepreneur, attorney, and mother who turned her passion for self-care and haircare into a business. One of the top texture salons in the country, the salon has been featured in major media outlets including Glamour magazine and The Zoe Report, and offers an array of services by texture experts.
Powell is passionate about encouraging people to embrace their beauty on the inside and out, and aims to encourage her community to embrace, love, and preserve their unique hair texture. She is also busy working on the launch of Naturally Drenched, a vegan haircare brand that is catered towards men and women who are looking for a natural, healthy, and eco-conscious hair product.
“I think that the role that we’re playing is creating an environment where everybody can really embrace and love their texture,” says Powell. “At Maggie Rose Salon, we pride ourselves on educating and sharing knowledge with people so they can not only learn about their texture, but also love it.”
We chatted with Powell, who took us behind-the-scenes of the salon, giving us the inside scoop on what inspired the creation of Maggie Rose Salon, services offered, and more:
When did Maggie Rose Salon open?
I started my salon in August 2013 and then renamed it to Maggie Rose Salon after my daughter, Magnolia Rose.
Whats the meaning behind the name?
The name Maggie Rose was inspired by my 8-year-old daughter, Magnolia Rose, who was named after the flower. Magnolias represent love for nature, feminine sweetness, and beauty. Encompassing all that this flower represents, I couldn’t think of a better way to express these characteristics in people than through the natural essence of hair.
What inspired the opening of Maggie Rose Salon?
I used to wear a lot of sew-in extensions and a friend of mine from Maryland shared that she knew someone who offered $50 sew-ins. For anyone who has gotten or gets sew-in extensions, $50 is a deal of a lifetime! Starting a business that could be accessible and affordable is truly what kickstarted Maggie Rose Salon. When I first opened up my salon it started as a side hustle, but as I transitioned into my natural hair journey, so did my salon.
What services do you offer?
We offer color, curl cuts, and texture services. With each service, we work with the individual and their hair needs to promote optimal health for their curls.
Which product lines do you work with and carry?
At Maggie Rose Salon, we use several different lines to provide options for the beautiful range of curls that come in. Some of our favorite brands are Biolage, Design Essentials, Redken, Truss, and Miss Jessie’s.
What do guests love about coming to Maggie Rose Salon?
At the salon, we really pride ourselves on providing our clients with top-notch service. It’s one thing to do a client’s hair to the style and cut of their liking, and it’s another to walk them through every step of the process so that they feel comfortable and can be educated on their hair. From the moment someone walks into the salon with their name on a specific mirror when they check-in, to a takeaway card with every product that was used along with a step-by-step process of how their hair was treated, our clients always leave feeling taken care of and secure in the service they received—and themselves.
