Why You’ll Love It: The Spa at Grand Wailea was a pioneer in wellness when it originally opened more than 30 years ago, becoming incredibly well known for its robust array of hydrothermal amenities. When concepting and designing Kilolani Spa, we wanted to honor that legacy and create a modern wellness experience that would transcend for the next 30 years.

We created an even larger hydrothermal experience that spans over 7,000 square feet and includes indoor/outdoor and communal (co-ed) areas. Guests are loving this modernized experience, especially the large Hammam (the only one in Hawaii) and lava rock waterfall showers that open to the garden.

Key Features: Kilolani Spa is the largest spa in Hawaii spanning 50,000 square feet. Kilolani provides indoor and outdoor spaces that are layered with touchstones to Hawaiian culture that showcase and array of diverse wellness experiences. The Kilolani experience being with a journey through “the poral” which is a multisensorial decompression zone where guests are invited to set an intention for their experience and participate in a purification ritual.

The spa has changing rooms with rainfall showers and grooming stations featuring Dyson and sustainable grooming amenities. It boasts more than 7,000 square feet of hydrothermal space, including the Hydrothermal Gardens and Communal Hydrotherapy.

The Hydrothermal Gardens is an al fresco experiences with diverse heating and cooling features to stimulate the circulatory systems and stabilize the nervous systems including DIY salt scrub stations, steam room, sauna, vitality pool, warm and cool waterfall showers, deluge shower, and resting area.

The Communal Hydrotherapy includes Hawaii’s first Hammam, Hammam treatment rooms featuring locally sourced herbs and botanicals, salt water vitality pool that is as salient as the ocean, and halotherapy-infused infrared saunas. Spa treatment guests receive complimentary access to the hydrothermal areas in the hour before their treatment.

Key Features (cont.): Kilolani Spa features two relaxation spaces—the Reflection Lounge and the Meditation Lounge. The Reflection Lounge is an expansive lounge to enjoy natural light, fresh breezing, and the ocean view pre or post-treatment. The Meditation Lounge restores mind body connection using harmonic and vibrational therapy calibrated to the Hawaiian Lunar Calendar.

The spa features 40 treatment rooms including two deluxe couples suites with private bathing and resting areas. Kilolani has a full-service salon offering a range of beauty treatments. Featuring a lively and sophisticated design, the salon includes a champagne bar, multifunctional pedicure and manicure stations, and hair stations. To accommodate special events and small groups, the Salon has a Celebration Suite, a private space for brides or other special occasions.

Kilolani has a state-of-the-art Fitness Center equipped with an assortment of the best-in-class brands including Technogym and Peloton. An adaptable Movement Studio is adjacent to the Fitness Center and features a robust array of movement and mindfulness classes including Technogym’s Group Cycle and Sound Healing. 

The spa features a 1,200-square-foot retail boutique with an ever-evolving collection of locally made wellness products and artisanal items that reflect Kilolnai’s traditional Hawaiian roots, complemented by innovations skincare, wellness, and lifestyle brands. 

Adjacent to the spa is Biostation, a cutting-edge functional medicine center offering an array of anti-ageing and wellness services, preventative healthcare, and personalized treatment plans.

Snacks Served: House made protein bites, fresh fruit, and water infused with tropical herbs and fruits. Additionally, Kilolani also has a wellness grab & go featuring a curated selection of Erewhon wellness items and a seasonal selection of healthy elixirs and lite bites for purchase.

Insider’s Tip: The Reflection (relaxation) Lounge at the spa has the best view of sunset on property. I highly recommend booking a treatment around 5 p.m. to enjoy the incredible view after.

Bonus: The spa experience was inspired by the power of healing through sound; this is pulled through the experience in multiple areas. Pioneering a new type of “sound healing,” Kilolani Spa has developed a unique blend of harmonic sound therapy with oli (Hawaiian chants for wisdom, well-being, and preservation).

Spearheaded by Kalei Uwekoolani, Cultural Program Manager, this powerful experience is designed to clear energetic blocks and improve overall well-being. This is an incredibly powerful experience that is offered to groups and special events. Additionally, this sound was recorded and is playing within the spa portal to support the intention and cleansing ritual.

In addition to the Reflection Lounge, the spa has a Meditation Lounge for guests looking to reflect in a tranquil space following their treatment. Guests can enjoy this experience in complete quiet or add-on a vibroacoustic meditation experience.

We partnered with Mind Sync to develop specialized programs aligned to the Hawaiian Lunar Calendar. These programs are designed to support guests emotional well-being during each anahulu (10-day period). For example, the Ho’emi program (equivalent of waning moon) focuses on reflection, gratitude, and surrender.

Splurge Treatment: The 120-minute Haute Custom Facial. I’m a skincare junkie and this is the best facial I have ever experienced. From the moment I met the founders, I knew I had to bring them into Kilolani as their approach is thoughtful and unique.

Haute Beauty is an innovative skincare company from Barcelona that provides truly authentic, personalized skincare. Each Haute Beauty experience begins with their signature skincare diagnostic to determine your specific Dermaprofile, which is based on 800 different skin types. The specific Dermaprofile then outlines an individualized program. This program in an immersive experience that is diverse in products, techniques, and technology inclusions.

Their products are clean undiluted antioxidants, biotech molecules, and restorative botanical extracts and are designed to restore luminosity, repair, and sculpt the face, neck, and décolleté. The experience is incredibly effective with immediate visible results. It also includes wonderful relaxation touches such as aromatherapy inhalations, neck and shoulder massage, and foot massage.

Favorite Treatment: The Haute Custom Facial and ‘Awa Relaxation Ritual. The ‘Awa Relaxation Ritual is designed to lull guests into a state of deep relaxation and promote restful sleep. Featuring holistic cures that reflect the healing arts traditions passed down from generation to generation in Hawaii and plants revered for their relaxation qualities including ground kava kava (awa) and lavender. The ‘awa gives you a sensation of floating. It’s ideal after a long day of travel and to align with the time difference.

Unique Treatment: The Helu Po Experience. Drawing inspiration from the Kaulana Mahina—the Hawaiian moon calendar—which divides each month into three helu pō or moon phases, Kilolani’s programming continuously evolves in tandem with the current anahulu (a 10-day period). The Helu Po experience is like a full immersion in the current moon phase.

Developed in partnership with Native Hawaiians, Jeana Iwalani Naluai, owner of Ho’omana Training Center and Kalei Uwekoolani, Grand Wailea’s Cultural Manager, each Helu Po experience features hand-selected native botanicals, holistic bodywork treatments, and mindfulness practices designed to best support guests’ physical and emotional wellbeing during that period.
