As you enter the Austrian Alps into the lush forests and gentle hills of Going am Wilden Kaiser, the soundtrack to “The Sound of Music” permeates your brain and you may catch yourself gleefully lip syncing the lyrics. The lilting chorus to the title song could not be more befitting as when you enter the premises of Bio-Hotel Stanglwirt.
The five-star hotel has been recognized by Conde Nast and TripAdvisor as one of Europe’s premier resort and spa retreats year after year, leaving no question as to why it has attracted luminaries from the worlds of sports, entertainment, and politics for decades. If Stanglwirt beckons you, take heed — it’s a special place that you should experience at least once.

Stanglwirt’s history begins in the 16th century as a tavern for miners escaping the ravages of the plague by indulging in wine as immunization. The tavern becomes an inn in 1643, and the Stanglwirt namesake was born.
Eleven generations later, the descendants of the founders still own and operate the resort and onsite farm. Steeped intradition and Tyrolean hospitality, Stanglwirt is an unforgettable and unique resort experience.
Following major renovations and growth, Stanglwirth now boasts 171 rooms and suites, an organic Alpine farm, children’s farm, cheese factory, the renowned Peter Burwash tennis school, equestrian school, golf clinic, ski academy, and boxing training.
The property also offers a ski academy and is the ultimate winter travel destination. [Photo courtesy of Bio-Hotel Stanglwirt]
The farm grows food for the resort’s restaurants, which feature deliciously fresh Tyrolean and international cuisine. Their rustic Michelin-Guide restaurant, Gashof — with its low-wooden ceilings, soft candlelight, and famous “cowshed” windows — is booked solid almost every night with both hotel guests and outside visitors.
The breakfast buffet is a legendary feast for the eyes and palate, and includes made-to-order crepes and, perhaps, the best omelets ever. Made in-house and incredibly delicious cheeses and garden-fresh produce abound, as does house-made breads and pastries, fresh squeezed juices, local sausages, cured meats, and specialty coffees.
Luxury meets Tyrolean tradition in the rooms and suites that are decked in solid Swiss stone pine and bed linens made from the finest pure cotton. Marbled bathrooms with soaking tubs and baroque brass fixtures add an ornate touch, while the cozy fireplace and views of snow-capped Wilder Kaiser render quintessential mountain-lodge coziness.

One of the best features of Stanglwirt is its maze of corridors and hidden spaces where you’ll discover things you hadn’t noticed before like a personalized scavenger hunt. An unintended wrong turn or detour leads you to glass enclosed displays of antique machinery and outdoor gear, or peek behind a nondescript door to uncover an antique lavatory with a throne commode and some amusing apparatus.
It’s probably apparent by now that Stanglwirt isn’t a typical hotel. Generations of families come year after year. Loyal guests hire the resort’s town car to drive them in from Paris, Prague, and beyond. Sports legends, chefs, and public figures come to Stanglwirt for a real vacation away from the chaos and clamor.
Families and friends spend time together, creating meaningful memories in the expansive lounge and more intimate spaces furnished with plush sofas and high-back chairs while enjoying artisan cocktails or morning coffee. It’s a place to disconnect from social media and reconnect with old friends and connect with new ones.

The Spa at Stanglwirt
While there is so much more going on at Stanglwirt to discuss, particularly its green energy program and commitment to sustainability, its spa is a world unto itself and unlike any other. An integral part of the Stanglwirt experience, it is common for men, women, kids, and teens to roam the hallways, and even lobby, in bathrobes and slippers (which are supplied in your guest room, along with a tote bag).
While there is a locker room, you must request a key at the hotel front desk first — if you forget. it’s a long trek from the spa to the hotel reception. However, most guests arrive ready to go in swimsuit and bathrobe, and carry personal items such as phones and room keys in the tote bag.
The massive, multi-level, 130,000-square-foot spa complex is available for guests to use as much as they like during their stay at no additional charge. This includes an extensive “fitness garden” with equipment sponsored by the Terminator himself and offers classes and workshops such as yoga, Pilates, and sound baths at no extra cost.
The spa and wellness complex can appear overwhelming on first visit. It can even be challenging to remember if you are upstairs or downstairs, and the labyrinth of relaxation rooms, verandas, pools, saunas, and steam rooms can take a little time to find your direction — but it all makes sense after the first day.

The “Rock Well-Being World” consists of a family, adults-only, and a clothing-optional area behind a closed door. The family area boasts the “Children’s Waterworld” with a water slide, movie projection, and much more surrounded by warm and cold pools with moats and bridges, and lounge chairs spread throughout.
The upstairs, adults-only area features their famous rock sauna with salt and steam grotto, the Wilder Kaiser sauna, mountain stone sauna, a marble steam bath and waterfall, a rock relaxation room with aquarium and hammock lounge beds, an event sauna with choreographed ceremonies, an indoor/outdoor pool with bubble jets recliners, an Olympic-size pool with Omega time recording, sun-drenched lounge areas big and small with fireplaces and cozy beds, and a secret upstairs lounge with waterbeds that will blow you away.
Showers and restrooms are scattered throughout the spa, so there’s no need to return to the locker room to rinse off. If this all sounds like a lot, take a deep breath — there’s still the treatment rooms and spa services that range from soothing Ayurvedic massages and nutritious body wraps, to clinical-grade facials using cutting-edge products and methods. The light-filled waiting area is augmented by a fireplace and candles to put you in relaxation mode while you await your service.
To give an even more thorough explanation of the spa and the treatments offered, Stanglwirt’s Spa Director Julia Ressler discusses the amenities and services available.

Tell us about the amenities featured at your spa.
Our spa offers spacious relaxation areas with open fireplaces and cozy “snuggle shells” that invite guests to unwind and linger. A special focus is placed on our consistent sustainability and organic philosophy: the entire wellness area is fully integrated into the eco-conscious values of our house, which also operates as an organic farm. Sustainability is a priority in every aspect of our spa — from the materials we use to the treatments we offer.
What truly sets our spa apart is the individuality of our treatments. Our experienced therapists not only bring extensive expertise but are also encouraged to express their own personality and incorporate their unique specializations. This allows us to offer a wide range of advanced techniques such as Rolfing and biomechanics, full-body reflexology massages, Japanese SI therapy, and many more.
At our spa, treatments are never standardized — the focus is always on the guest as an individual. We take the time to understand their specific wishes and needs, creating a truly personalized and holistic wellness experience of the highest standard.

In addition, our relaxation area features a state-of-the-art PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) therapy bed with integrated micro-vibration — designed to support cell regeneration.
