We Tried Algenist's New BLUE ALGAE VITAMIN C Dark Spot Correcting Peel
If you have discoloration such as dark spots, melasma, acne scars or even freckles, you may have searched for products to help reduce their appearance. Or if you have sun damage, you probably would love to fix it. Algenist’s Blue Algae Vitamin C Dark Spot Correcting Peel and new Blue Algae Vitamin C Skinclarity Brightening Serum, featuring their breakthrough ingredient discovery, Blue Algae Vitamin C, are both formulated to help you with just that.
Last summer, we had the opportunity to attend a Virtual Masterclass to learn about Blue Algae Vitamin C Dark Spot Correcting Peel. As we tried the peel in-person at home, Tammy Yaiser, Algenist Head Formulator and VP of Product Development, and medical esthetician Jordana Mattioli answered all our questions along with Amy Turman, Associate Director of Consumer Engagement, and Shannon Shapiro, Executive Director of Marketing.

Blue Algae Vitamin C Dark Spot Correcting Peel features Algenist’s ingredient discovery, 100% pure L-Ascorbic Acid extracted from spirulina, a blue-green algae with naturally-occuring vitamin C. The formula is safe for all skin tones and addresses multiple types of discoloration. AHAs provide surface-level exfoliation, oil-soluble BHA Salicylic Acid exfoliates deeper, and PHA Gluconolactone provides gradual surface-level penetration while helping to retain barrier moisture.
The peel also contains Tranexamic Acid, most commonly used in professional treatments, and azelaic acid, notably safe and beneficial in combination with vitamin C for treating discoloration in skin of color. Algenist products are consumer and dermatologist-tested, non-comedogenic, hypoallergenic, and free of parabens, phthalates, nitrosamine, and triclosan.
“We wanted to make BLUE ALGAE VITAMIN C Dark Spot Correcting Peel powerful, but gentle and easy-to-use,” explained Yaiser. “Glycerin is the first ingredient—not water—keeping our Blue Algae Vitamin C stable in a novel delivery for Ascorbic Acid. The formula activates on contact with water only when applied to damp skin. While we formulate with highly potent L-Ascorbic Acid from spirulina and exfoliating acids, we also control the degree of exfoliation and the dwell time of the product. These three controlled factors—the humectant base of glycerin, the level of exfoliation, and the dwell time—render our efficacious peel gentle, without the dryness or downtime of a professional treatment.”
Algenist is now expanding on their Blue Algae innovation with its newest launch, Blue Algae Vitamin C Skinclarity Brightening Serum ($72). This serum is a daily, vitamin C concentrated serum that is designed to enhance brightness and luminosity, even skin tone, smooth texture, and help improve the visible signs of photoaging for overall improved skin clarity. The new product is formulated with exclusive vitamin C from Spirulina, a blue-green algae with antioxidant properties to help fight free radicals, brighten, and even tone. It also features patented and exclusive alguronic acid from algae to visibly target fine lines and wrinkles.
My Experience with Blue Algae Vitamin C Dark Spot Correcting Peel:
Personally, I have a lot of sun damage that I would love to address, so I was excited to try this product out. After washing my face, I misted it with Algenist’s SPLASH Hydrating Setting Mist to hydrate it, since the product works best on slightly damp skin.
Next, I applied BLUE ALGAE VITAMIN C Dark Spot Correcting Peel to my entire face (without getting too close to my eyes). You can also use the product on the neck or chest, which I may try in the future. The product feels great going on, like honey with a light cooling and tingling sensation. There is no synthetic fragrance, but the scent is blue tansy and lavender oil.
After 20 minutes, I rinsed off the product and my skin felt smooth, fresh, and glowing. I finished off the treatment by applying GENIUS Collagen Calming Relief and GENIUS Sleeping Collagen to calm and moisturize my skin. It felt really good to take some time out of my day to relax and take care of my skin. By the end of my treatment, my skin felt healthy and looked dewy!
I’ve definitely found some new Algenist products that I can’t wait to use again. (You can use BLUE ALGAE VITAMIN C Dark Spot Correcting Peel once or twice a week.) In Algenist’s clinical study, 89% of participants said dark spots were visibly diminished and 85% said pores were visibly reduced.
Algenist recommends using Dark Spot Correcting Peel for the following benefits:
Correcting and fading the look of dark spots and overall discoloration, hyperpigmentation, sun spots, age spots, and uneven skin tone.
Overall brighter complexion, clarity, and texture.
Brightened overall appearance to reveal smooth and rejuvenated skin.
Exfoliating to remove rough, dead skin cells and dirt build-up on skin to enhance and maintain the moisture barrier.
It’s an easy at-home peel with no down time to see results.
BLUE ALGAE VITAMIN C Dark Spot Correcting Peel is available at Algenist and Sephora for $85.
