Spa Review: We Tried the Nioxin Head Spa Service at Kim Sun Young Salon Los Angeles

Starting on June 4, Kim Sun Young Salon in Los Angeles started offering Nioxin Head Spa Service—an exclusive wellness treatment that restores and cleanses the scalp for stronger, healthier hair. Whether you have thinning hair and you want to promote growth, or you feel like your scalp could use a refresh (which we all need every now and then due to product and environmental buildup), it’s a great way to reboot the scalp and have your hair looking and feeling better in no time.
I went to the Kim Sun Young (KSY) Salon location in Koreatown, but there are multiple locations throughout Southern California, New York, as well as international locations in Australia and South Korea. KSY opened its first salon in Los Angeles in 1990 and has been a leader in the Korean hair industry for 50 years. Not only are the salons known for their permanent wave styles, but they also invented a hair straightening method called ‘panel straight,’ in addition to being experts in thermal hair straightening.

The treatment restores and cleanses the scalp for stronger, healthier hair and promotes hair growth.
It includes a Nioxin Dermabrasion Treatment that acts like a facial for the scalp and helps to accelerate skin surface regeneration by up to 34 percent.
The treatment also features Nioxin’s 3 Part System No.3, which leaves hair thicker, denser-looking and with a more vibrant color.
The service takes less than two hours and includes relaxing head massages throughout the treatment.
Suitable for color-treated hair, the Head Spa Service can be performed every 30 to 45 days when your scalp needs a reboot.
It costs $65, making it an affordable wellness service that won’t break the bank.

Upon checking in, I was given a light robe to wear over my clothes and offered my choice of Korean beverages and snacks, which I enjoyed throughout my service. I sat down at one of the stations, where my stylist proceeded to place a clear plastic visor over my forehead to prevent any product from getting in my eyes.

After gently brushing my hair to remove tangles and separating it into sections with a comb, my stylist proceeded with the first part of the Head Spa Service: scalp exfoliation. He applied Nioxin Dermabrasion Treatment onto my dry unwashed hair and spent several minutes massaging it into my scalp (which felt amazing) to activate the product, then left it on for 10 minutes to develop.
The Nioxin Dermabrasion Treatment is an anti-aging treatment with Scalp Infusion Technology that helps regenerate and revitalize scalp skin by acting as a facial for the scalp. This product is exclusively for in-salon use, and works by removing build-up on the scalp to restore its condition. It also helps accelerate skin surface regeneration by up to 34 percent compared to untreated skin.
My service began with an application of the Nioxin Dermabrasion Scalp Renewal Treatment, which acts like a facial for the scalp.
After applying the treatment, my stylist placed a protective cap around my head and guided me into the salon’s enclosed relaxation area, which features special warm lamps that help hair treatments process faster. While hanging out in there, I was also treated to OPI ProSpa Advanced Softening Gloves, which contain ultra-hydrating macadamia oil and shea butter. I loved the extra pampering and my hands felt incredibly soft and smooth afterwards!

I enjoyed an OPI moisturizing hand treatment in the relaxation area before my blow-out.
Next, I was led to the shampoo bowl where the treatment was thoroughly rinsed from my hair and scalp, then it was time for the next step: Nioxin 3 Part System No.3. This treatment is formulated to remove follicle-clogging sebum, fatty acids and environmental residues while providing moisture balance and color protection. The result? Thicker, denser-looking hair and a more vibrant color.
After washing the exfoliating treatment from my hair with Nioxin Cleanser Shampoo, the Scalp Therapy Conditioner was applied from my roots to ends, massaged in and left on for an additional three minutes before it was rinsed out. Next, the Scalp & Hair Treatment was evenly applied to my entire scalp and left on, then I returned to the styling station where I was given a blow-out.
My scalp felt incredibly smooth and soft to the touch, and my hair looked shiny and full. They say that healthy hair starts with the scalp, and by getting a Head Spa Service every now and then, you’re giving your scalp the opportunity to refresh so that it can serve as a better foundation for hair growth and health. Plus, who wouldn’t look forward to receiving an amazing scalp massage?
