Beauty Boss: Ann Marie Simpson-Einziger, Co-Founder of Mother Science
Our latest Beauty Boss is Ann Marie Simpson-Einziger, a renowned violinist and Co-Founder of Mother Science—a biotech skincare brand that features the patented and clinically tested molecule Malassezin, a revolutionary (and first-to-market) ingredient that targets dark spots and hyperpigmentation in skin to brighten and smooth its appearance.
Ann Marie and her husband, Mike Einziger (lead guitarist for Incubus), who she founded Mother Science with, both share a passion for science. She is a former science teacher who taught chemistry and physics while he studied the history and philosophy of physics at Harvard. Together, they also previously founded Mixhalo, a tech company.
Meet Heath Wilson, the 9-Year-Old Founder of Heathmade Los Angeles
In 2016 when Ann Marie developed tinea versicolor, a harmless skin condition that causes lightened patches of skin, she began to wonder if what was causing her condition could somehow be used to reduce dark spots on skin. After working for years with a team of leading scientists, chemists and dermatologists, the couple discovered Malassezin, a naturally occurring molecule on skin, which they successfully patented and recreated through biotechnology, clinical trials and lab studies, ultimately leading to the creation of Mother Science.
We chatted with Ann Marie who shared the inspiration behind the brand, secrets for success, beauty tips, and much more.
When was Mother Science founded and what does the name mean?
We officially started Mother Science in June of 2021, but there were six years of prior research and development we put into the Malassezin technology that powers the brand. We officially launched our first product in May 2023.
Mother Science is a name that means so much to me. I first introduced it as an entity, similar to “Mother Nature.” “Mother Science” brings to light the discoveries that can be made by using cutting-edge technology, all while paying homage to the ancient technology that we unlock by applying the scientific process to nature. “Mother Science” is devoted to solving problems, and she is good for both you and the planet.
Another way that I see Mother Science is through the question: “Who is the mother of science?” The answer I like is, “Curiosity.” Curiosity is the mother of science, in the way that necessity is the mother of invention. Curiosity is what drove this brand into existence, and we want to create a community of curious customers who enjoy learning, sharing, and asking questions.
Lastly, the name Mother Science ties back to the concept of Mothers and Fathers of Science. Fathers of Science grossly outnumber the Mothers, and we believe in a future that supports the contributions and leadership of women.
What inspired the creation of the brand?
I had a skin condition on my back caused by an imbalance in my skin’s microbiome. When I wanted to understand why the imbalance caused a brightening of my skin, we discovered our active ingredient, Malassezin. We became obsessed with understanding what this naturally-occuring molecule could do. Rigorous science characterized our molecule as an antioxidant that was 10 times more powerful than vitamin C, and with the ability to improve dark spots, fine lines and wrinkles, and the skin’s moisture barrier. It was able to deliver quick, clinical results with no irritation. We wanted the highest purpose for our discovery, and creating a brand to launch a skincare line was the answer.
Does Mother Science have a hero product?
Yes! Our first product is the “Molecular Hero Serum.” It features the powerful ingredient Malassezin and it targets dark spots while being a global anti-aging treatment to boot. It is non-irritating, easy to use morning and night, and it complements any skin treatments you may already be using.
What are your favorite products from your brand?
The “Molecular Hero Serum” is the best. It is the only anti-aging product that I use and it delivers superior results. It is unlike anything else on the market, and it is in a category of innovation and efficacy all of its own.
Where are your products sold?
Our Molecular Hero Serum is currently available direct-to-consumer, only on our website.
Future plans for the brand?
We are ambitious…we want to disrupt the beauty ecosystem with a new active, especially since powerful and clinically-proven new active ingredients are rare in the beauty world. We see Malassezin as a platform molecule and we are excited about the next products that are in development.
Who inspires you?
All of my mentors inspire me. In my past life as a violinist/composer I owe so much to Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) and Hans Zimmer. On my Mother Science journey, I’m inspired by Dr. Pearl Grimes, Susan Goldsberry, JuE Wong, Tim McCraw, and Bob Ruffolo. All of these men and women have built their own companies and have done it with brilliance, kindness, grace, and humility. They are brave visionaries in their own right, and leaders that model the values that matter. I could extoll their virtues, but I encourage you to learn about all of them, because they all have something special to share.
Secret to success?
The secret to success is absolutely in finding the right collaborators and mentors. Finding people who share your vision, passion, ambition, and goal of continuous improvement is everything.
Beauty secrets?
I have a minimal beauty routine. The Mother Science “Molecular Hero Serum” replaces a vitamin C serum in the morning and it replaces an anti-aging treatment at night. It really multitasks. My other beauty secret is that I am filled with gratitude for this sweet, precious time we have on this planet. I haven’t figured how to bottle that up, but I’m convinced that meditating on the beauty of nature, watching my babies grow, and hugging the people I love has imparted beauty upon me.
Wellness tips?
I’m obsessed with the microbiome. The mutually symbiotic organisms that have co-evolved with us are endlessly fascinating and we’ve just scratched the surface in understanding them. Malassezin was discovered when understanding an imbalance in my own skin’s microbiome, and I love that we can make choices to nourish and restore balance to our skin and body.
Many people know about the gut or skin microbiome, but I’m also interested in the microbiome of the nose! I use FEND, a spray that has helped me stay healthy when I travel.
Best advice?
It is important and beautiful to be vulnerable. My closest relationships allow me to be vulnerable, and it is in that place where I learn the most and grow the most.
Favorite way to relax?
Nothing is more relaxing to me than a hot bath with Epsom salts and a bit of dark chocolate. Reading by the fireplace with a hot drink is a close second.
