Sustainable Spotlight: James Pecis on His Path to Professional-Grade, Plastic-Free Hair Care

The idea for Blu&Green came about as a result of Pecis realizing there was nothing on the market that aligned with his non-toxic, low-waste values and met the standards that his celebrity and fashion clients required, so he and co-founder Kimberly Norcott set out to create a product line that met those demands, which included being free of toxins and damaging aerosols.

All of Blu&Green’s products are vegan and cruelty-free, and their packaging is designed to be lightweight, durable, and made from materials that are commonly recyclable or biodegradable. Part of the brand’s mission is to reduce plastic waste, and being Certified Plastic Negative, they support the removal of nature-bound plastic to be recycled and repurposed.

We chatted with Pecis, who shared the inspiration behind the brand, secrets for success, best advice, favorite wellness tips, and much more.

Blu&Green’s Daily Shampoo Tablets ($32) remove impurities on the surface and fortify the hair and scalp with nourishing elements to promote stronger strands and healthier hair growth.

When was Blu&Green founded and what inspired the creation of the brand?

Blu & Green was founded in early 2024. Kim and I saw a problem within the beauty industry — the excessive use of plastic. As a fashion and editorial hairstylist, I experienced the problem most acutely with prestige products that were used backstage at fashion shows and on shoots. We set out to create a plastic-free, high-performance hair care brand that appeals to both professional stylists and consumers.

Do you have a hero product?

We launched with a shampoo and conditioner in a tablet form. They received a lot of attention and sold out quite quickly. Our current hero product is the Weekly Repair Mask. It’s the one I recommend to all the models on set and backstage at shows. You see effective results after the first use. It leaves even the most damaged, crunchiest hair so soft.

What’s your favorite product from the line?

I love the Texture Dust and use it constantly in my work. I also love the way our new Daily Shampoo Concentrate cleans thoroughly while being really gentle on the hair.

My new favorite product launches in April is the Rise + Set Light Styling Cream — I can use it for air-drying and it leaves the hair extra soft and full after brushing out, or I can do a big blowout with it. I love that there is a heat protectant, and the hair will stay soft and hold even more volume.

Blu&Green’s Weekly Repair Mask ($38) is a super-concentrated cream formula that penetrates hair, leaving each strand softer and more flexible while providing heat protection.

Where are your products sold?

Blu&Green is sold on our website, at select salons nationwide, and in a few curated boutiques. We will be launching at ShopGood in San Diego this spring.

Future plans for the brand?

Our initial focus for Blu&Green has been the salon channel. We’ve been steadily growing in salons in the United States and are focused on building relationships with salon owners and stylists and providing education. We will thoughtfully continue to increase our presence at retail.

We’re excited to launch at Shop Good in April. We’re currently working with a few retailers outside of the U.S. and plan to expand internationally over the next few years.

Who inspires you?

I have always been inspired by people and brands that operate in a way that puts people and the environment at the forefront of their priorities, and who use their platform to make the world a better place. People who do things beyond just working for profit inspire me.

Blu&Green’s Texture Dust ($26) is an ultra-lightweight formula that adds grip and structure to hairstylies without stiffness or stickiness.

Secret to success?

Slow and steady. Find your rhythm. Give it your all, and enjoy the process. You're only as strong as the people you work with, so take care of them and grow together.

Best advice?

Be kind to everyone.

Self-care secrets?

Water, sleep, sunscreen, and clean living. And I always use our Weekly Repair Mask so the sun and ocean don’t destroy my hair.

Wellness tips?

Go to bed early, wake up early, make time to decompress and move your body. I like a sunrise surf. Surround yourself with positive people who inspire you, bring you happiness, and let you be you.
