Our latest Beauty Boss is Suzanne Somers, Hollywood icon and founder of Suzanne Organics—a clean line of skin care, beauty and hair products that is strictly created from non-toxic chemicals and organic materials, providing a healthier approach to the ingredients found in so many mainstream beauty products. Somers’ impressive career has spanned multiple decades, and she has achieved extraordinary success as an actress, singer, New York Times best-selling author, entrepreneur, and lecturer. She also received an Emmy nomination for her weekly Lifetime Network talk show, The Suzanne Show, for its thought-provoking and in-depth information on health and wellness.

In 2000, Somers was diagnosed with breast cancer and after beating the disease, she wanted to ensure that others had access to information on healthy living and developed her pure and clean beauty line to help others look and feel their best. We spoke with Somers, who shared beauty and wellness tips, her favorite ways to relax, and more.

When was Suzanne Organics founded?

What inspired the creation of the brand?

When I was diagnosed with breast cancer I had to do some serious soul searching. What had I done to play host to this terrible disease? I realized that I had not taken chemicals and toxicity seriously. So I changed my life. I decided to eat as though my life depended upon it and that I would avoid chemicals at all costs that I could control. It became clear to me that toxins enter the body through three major portals: the skin, our GI tracts from the food we eat, and the air we breathe.

For example, when you look at your arm under a microscope, what we know of as ‘pores’ look like big holes. Using that visual, imagine putting toxic chemical cream on your skin. Where is it going to go? It’s going to drop into those large ‘holes’ and end up in our bloodstream, looking for fatty organs and glands to attack.

My company created products with ingredients that are good for you. Everything in each of these products can provide a useful service once they have entered your bloodstream. I’m very proud of our products. They have earned the insignia called “certified toxic-free,” which has very stringent guidelines. The ingredients within the products had to be grown organically, extracted organically, and nothing upwind or downwind of the product can be toxic to contaminate our products in order to fulfill those guidelines. They work great.

Does Suzanne Organics have a hero product?

There are several, but my absolute favorite is the True Brazilian Organic Activating Serum for hair. It turns hair into beautiful silky smoothness with no chemicals.

What are your favorite products from your brand?

First is my Ageless Serum made with algae from purified waters. I also love my Glutathione Skin Reform Serum, which puts life back into the skin and cells, Radiance Oil Moisturizer, Coconut Oil Moisture Serum, Radiance Oil Cleanser and Everyday Facial Cleanser. I could go on and on—they’re all incredible. Also, the Anti-Aging Eye Cream made from Alpine Rose stem cells is pretty awesome.

Where are your products sold?

Our products are sold mostly online at SuzanneSomers.com and also on our two weekly Facebook Live shows, which are so fun. We are in retail at a few upscale health-type stores in kiosks.

Suzanne Organics Ageless Serum helps to plump, firm and restore elasticity to aging skin.

Who inspires you?

My husband Alan, who is my life partner, my best friend, and my man. Our life is like a figure eight: business, love, pleasure—it never begins and it never ends.

Secret to success?

The secret to success is to always tell the truth. I’m very proud of the fact that my books, businesses, and my lecture appearances are so widely received. My constituency knows that I have their back—and I do. They can count on me to tell them the truth. Also, I constantly reinvent.

Beauty secrets?

I believe sleep is a game-changer. One of my most inexpensive beauty secrets is to take an Epsom salt bath two to three times a week. I put 3 1/2 cups of Epsom salt into a warm bath tub and soak for 20 minutes. The magnesium calms. Then I get a beautiful eight hours of sleep and an added benefit is that it also makes you regular.

Wellness tips?

For wellness tips, I recommend avoiding chemicals in any way that you can control. We are under the greatest environmental assault in the history of humanity. Cancer is an epidemic and it’s affecting more younger people. It’s important to pay attention to the changes to our food with genetic modification and pesticides. I only eat organic.

Best advice?

Hippocrates said it best: “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”

Favorite way to relax?

I love the weekends where Alan and I just spend the entire two days in bed. We bring food to the bedroom, watch movies, look at the view, and we sleep. It’s a beautiful thing.
