Behind the Brand: Bluejay's Chic E-Bikes Bring Style and Excitement to Everyday Adventures
Prior to starting Bluejay Bikes, Jen Cohen Bogan worked in the beauty industry as Vice President of Global Marketing and Digital at Kendo Brands, part of LVMH. When she rode an electric bike for the first time, she began to wonder why they weren’t more common. She began to do some research and felt really intrigued as a product marketer.
“I always wanted to do my own thing, but was waiting for the right product to speak to me because it is such a big undertaking and endeavor,” Bogan says. “I started one step at a time, did a ton of research, checked out bikes in various stores, test rode a ton of them, and what I discovered was that there was a huge disconnect with what the e-bike market offered—especially in terms of the aesthetic and what you would see as a traditional Dutch cruiser.”
After years of research and development, Bogan founded Bluejay Bikes in 2019. Her line of quality e-bikes are made with top-of-the-line materials, power and safety standards. They are available in a wide selection of styles (including vintage inspired) and fun colors such as mint green and blush pink, in addition to curated accessories ranging from helmets to baskets and more.
The Best Roller Skate Accessories
Bluejay Bikes are ideal for everything from leisurely rides and commutes to powering up hills. Their SPORT model is a versatile option that can handle different types of roads and paths with the ability to navigate on gravel, dirt and grass. Riding an e-bike is also a great way to get around town while enjoying the outdoors and lowering one’s carbon footprint in order to lead a more sustainable lifestyle that is good for the planet and one’s well-being.
The company also has a flagship showroom in Newport Beach, CA where bike enthusiasts can check out and shop the bikes and accessories in person. They also have the option of renting a bike for anywhere from two hours up to a week.
“Bluejay offers more colors than any other e-bike on the market, and that is one of the things I thought I would uniquely bring to a bike,” Bogan says. “Color was my number one thing. As a marketer, I know how important color is, and there really is a lack of color selection in the bike industry. I wanted to have a range of colors and my strategy on color is what we have always done in the beauty industry.”
We chatted with Bogan, who shared the inspiration behind the brand, favorite bike models, future plans, and more.
When was Bluejay Bikes founded and what’s the meaning behind the name?
Bluejay officially launched in late 2019, after many years of research and development. The name “Bluejay” came to me when I was thinking about something beautiful that flies, which is the essence of a Bluejay electric bicycle.
Tell us more about your bikes and what makes them special.
Bluejays are all about personalization, customization and enhancing your lifestyle. You can truly tailor your bike to your preferences and needs. In addition to gorgeous colors, the bikes come fully loaded with lights, a bell, racks, and more. We sell curated baskets, cell phone holders, coffee holders, and even pet holders. I don’t know of any other e-bike brand that approaches the design process like we do. We think about the customer’s lifestyle first and design everything from there.
Do you have a hero/favorite bike model?
The first model we ever launched was the Premiere, and with it I set out to design the most beautiful e-bike on the market with clean lines, rich colors and luxury finishes, but aesthetics is only a part of what makes the Bluejay Premiere Edition special. I wanted the total package: a bike that had an amazing feel to ride, was powerful yet extremely safe, and was completely useful in everyday life.
Lastly, I wanted high-quality components that didn't break down and were easy to service. The high-quality components and safety features, as well as lifestyle options, are available in our Premiere edition, as well as our second model—the SPORT. More models are coming soon.
Where are your products sold?
We sell our bikes on our website, at our store in Newport Beach, CA and in several bike shops nationwide.
What's next for the brand?
We have a lot of exciting things in the works. On March 20, the International Day of Happiness, we announced our new colors that are now available for pre-order: hot pink (in both the Premiere and Sport models), golden yellow and citrus orange, inspired by a mix of high fashion, European travel, and of course, Barbie. The bikes are gorgeous, bright, fun and set to ship out in May. We are also launching a new long-awaited kid’s model this year!
