Who doesn't swoon at the thought of a retreat in a private overwater bungalow where one can feel like a castaway, where civilization has virtually been left behind? The fantasy is all the better if you’re left with luxury amenities, including a personal butler, and an endless sea of turquoise glimmering in the sun’s rays.

You likely think you have to travel halfway around the world to far-off locales like Bora Bora or the Maldives to experience such a picture-perfect scenario. While those are definitely exquisite destinations to put on your bucket list, there's a viable option closer to home.

Located on the sugary-white sands of the Yucatan Peninsula, Palafitos Overwater Bungalows consist of tropical thatched-roof bungalows that belong to an exclusive enclave at the adults-only and all-inclusive El Dorado Maroma Resort.

Only 11 miles from the shopping and nightlife of Playa del Carmen, Maroma Beach, is worlds away from Cancún's clubs and partying., Palafitos is a slice of secluded perfection.

Each of the 31 bungalows perched over the Caribbean Sea is a romantic fairytale waiting to unfold. Every bungalow features chic amenities such as a premium stocked mini-bar, 24-hour room service, and premium toiletries.

Languid days of gourmet beach picnics melt into nights of candlelight dinners. All bungalows feature private decks with direct sea access, outdoor showers, a plunge pool, and a personal butler to make your stay more memorable.

As part of the El Dorado Maroma Resort, Palafitos guests have exclusive access to the Overwater Grill & Bar, where gourmet cuisine is prepared in an elegant setting composed of natural materials and textures that includes an outdoor deck on stilts over the sea.

In addition, Palafitos guests have full use of all 11 restaurants and bars at the resort, which include Italian, Mexican, Caribbean, and Asian fare, plus swim-up and beachside bars, and a taqueria with made-to-order tacos and homemade salsas

Palafitos Overwater Bungalows are a private tropical oasis

Each of the recently renovated bungalows is designed with plush textiles in a neutral palette augmented by warm woods and pops of vibrant color. Floor-to-ceiling windows and glass-bottom floor segments give an almost floating sensation, while the premium amenities provide every creature comfort a modern castaway could want.

Enjoy breakfast with the sunrise on the wooden deck before stepping down into the sea for a morning dip. Your butler will keep you supplied with sunscreen, in-suite gourmet snacks and beverages, provide dressing service, or assist in planning your beach day or excursion.

Favoring a more laid-back vibe, El Dorado Maroma eschews the flamboyance of many all-inclusive resorts in favor of a casual, toes-in-the-sand experience. Palafitos guests may enjoy the resort’s three freshwater pools and services at Náay Spa, which offers exclusive wine-enhanced treatments for face and body, plus a hydrotherapy circuit and fitness center.

All guests can partake in the many beachside entertainment and scheduled pop-up culinary events, including a weekly cochinita pibil. This is a unique cookout where meat is slow-cooked overnight with banana leaves, then removed in the afternoon for a succulent beachside feast that includes handmade tortillas, specialty drinks, and local rituals.

On Thursdays, the beach transforms into an extravagant Mexican fiesta with open grills, food stations, and lively entertainment. Guests can also head over to the Maroma Beach Club next door, where they can enjoy full privileges at the restaurant, bar, and all-day outdoor brunch.

The bungalows also have spacious living room areas with glass panels in the floor. Photo courtesy of Palafitos Overwater Bungalows at El Dorado Maroma Resort

One of the most unique features at the resort is their More Inclusive concept. Extending beyond the typical inclusion of food, beverages, and non-motorized water sports, More Inclusive features unique opportunities to experience the local culture and landscape with expert guides without the extra cost.

These extras include private airport transfers, catamaran and snorkeling tours, a wave runner session, and guided local tours to a cenote and ecotourism ranch.

Each bungalow is designed to give guests an immersive experience of comfort, privacy and breathtaking views. Photo courtesy of Palafitos Overwater Bungalows at El Dorado Maroma Resort
