On May 7, Dermalogica unveiled its new AI-powered digital skin analysis tool, Face Mapping—which combines the expertise of Dermalogica’s professional skin therapists with artificial intelligence to identify prominent skin conditions, recommend personalized products, and initiate an immediate live dialogue with a skin therapist. The new tool is modeled after the brand’s signature in-person analysis tool by the same name, performed by skin therapists around the world.

This launch enables consumers the ability to experience the benefits of a skin analysis even if they can’t visit a skin therapist in-person. Dermalogica collaborated closely with its tribe of skin therapists to help build the Face Mapping tool’s algorithm, harnessing a database of over 65,000 facial images and ranking the severity of seven skin concerns: pigmentation, dehydration, wrinkles, eyes, breakout activity, oiliness, and sensitivity. Based on those photos and rankings, Dermalogica created an AI-powered algorithm that offers instant analysis and direct access to a customized, convenient consultation.

“As a brand, we are built on the conversation between the therapist and consumer,” says Frank Freeman, Director of Digital Disruption for Dermalogica. “By moving skin consultations into the digital space, Dermalogica is embracing how consumers today want to understand their skin care needs, while still providing the element of human connection that Dermalogica is known for worldwide.”

Users can access the platform from their computer or mobile phone and take a photo or upload a selected image. After the image is uploaded, Face Mapping quickly identifies top skin concerns, then recommends products with active ingredients that target each concern. From there, users have the option of chatting live with a skin therapist to learn more about their skin. Face Mapping can also locate Dermalogica skin therapists in the immediate area, making the journey from skin assessment to skin treatment smart and seamless.

“Consumers today are inundated with bad skin care advice from unreliable sources,” says Aurelian Lis, Global CEO of Dermalogica. “Instead, Dermalogica’s Face Mapping tool combines AI with our expertise of teaching 100,000 licensed skin therapists each year to give diagnosis and an intelligent conversation with a certified expert. It’s our way of bringing personalized advice from the trusted skin therapist into the hands of literally anyone who has skin.”
